The aztecs had other tribes submitted and asked for tributes constantly, so they lived pretty well while the other tribes were essentially slaving away for them, I believe (I should be ashamed for uttering this words when talking about my country's history) that when the iberians came they lost the first encounters with the aztecs in an attempt to keep their city, so they allied with other tribes that were sick and tired of them and they overtook them.
