Dunno, i just squid on my superduke and dream about driving into a tree while popping a nice nooner, to end it all in style.

I wish beyond words that I could ride with robots/femanons or have one on the back with me but nobody here lives in the northeast USA and I'm destined to ride under the stars by myself

Go get on youtube. Tonnes of vids will teach you to do everything, then you just need to practice

If you have a few thousand on hand to drop on a bike plus another thousand for gear etc you are not poor and not a robot

I got my bike for $800 and paid $120 for gear. Definitely not cheap, especially if you're poor, but it's not out of reach at all.

I really badly want to get into this kind of thing but it's like a 30+ mile highway ride to anywhere worth going off-road, and I know that's not exactly ideal dual sport territory. An adventure bike would be ideal but I'm worried about handling something so big and heavy as an absolute beginner.

I recently bought one of these. It was very cheap since it's a bike from 1988 but it runs well and I'm having fun going to backroads and isolated places.

Big adventure bikes only become a problem on more technical stuff and when you eventually drop it. Lifting up 200kg+ of heavy-ass bike out of the mud for the 3rd time that day will not be a pleasurable experience.
Then again, you don't need a big adventure bike to have fun. A 500 cc-ish bike like the Kawasaki KLE 500 will have enough power to haul your ass on the highway and be light enough for dual-sport fun.

The helmet is a stand in for a room. Once you put it on, you can be as autistic as you want. It's not like there are people out on the backroads.
