I don't think it was environmental, the Walsall type had influence from the Whippet, there was a Darlaston type which had more terrier blood, the Cradley Heath type had more bulldog blood.

The american staffie is bigger and longer than the british staffie, a whippet is quite a long dog, so it makes sense for the american to be descended from the walsall type.
