That's actually a good question.
We can look at how other ugly animals do this.
Birds for example. Birds partner up, much like humans. The male is supposed to look pretty (which is why male birds (and often male animals in general) look better than the females.
But in case that (alone) doesn't work, the male can also impress the female by building a comfy nest for their offspring.
Likewise, certain sea creatures make works of art in the sand to show off their skill in... art making, I dunno. Either way, it works for them.
Now let's look at apes, who are supposedly most like us. Most large apes fight for dominance, with the alpha male breeding all the females.
This way the best seed gets spread the most.
But the apes usually raise the newborns as a single family. In other words, the loser males take care of their "wives" sons.
I wonder how they feel about that honestly. We consider it a cuck thing to do but maybe they feel different? I don't really know.
