They've been around a long time, but they're more apparent now for two reasons:

Secondly, we've had over a decade of severe economic mismanagement, so more people have failed at life and retreated.

I think life at home has become much more comfortable in the past few decades. From what my grandparents have told me, they left home to escape a shitty or boring life, but with the internet and videogames it's become much easier to "escape"

There are people involved in these systems I don't support, but usually they too are only desperate people like myself just trying to get by. Often they are too dumb, not involved beyond passive enabling, and/or desperate enough to compromise if they can see the harm their positions may cause. If was to commit suicide, I would essentially have nothing to lose and be (hypothetically) able to do such a drastic thing without worrying about the consequences, but in the end, the only truly evil people we hear about are usually only because they've been exposed, given media attention, and already locked up. I don't know any (hypothetical) targets i can personally justify seeing as I live a selfish just-trying-to-get-by life myself
