Feminism does not mean you cant be a stay at home mom if you choose. It just means it isnt the only option like it was in the past and you do it out of choice and not obligation. I am a feminist and a housewife at the moment but for a long time it was my husband who stayed home and me who worked or went to school and supported us financially.

Eh, I disagree but because of economics. If you double the workforce, you cut wages in half. It's not viable for a single person to sustain a house, not for the average Joe. The old mode doesn't work anymore because of economics. You can try to emulate it if the man or the woman makes enough money to cover both, but nowadays it's not common. Especially not for the women since they tend do divorce you if they make more money than you.

If the individual decisions of women existed in some kind of atomized special space where they couldn't affect anything else maybe it could be looked at as "well work or don't, either's fine," but that's not how the reality worked out at all.

This is also buying into a common myth about women working, which is that women never worked until recently when they finally won the right from evil men. In fact most women have been working what we would recognize as jobs since the very beginning of the industrial revolution and had just recently won a reprieve during the post-war boom. Women largely pushed this reprieve away because appliances made housework much easier, schools provide "free" daycare and their husband's wages started falling off in the late 60s and 70s, meaning they had to return to work to maintain their standard of living. Feminism was largely about trying to make those jobs into good jobs, not mothers suddenly deciding that they love working instead of being with their children. That's not true even to this day, you can tell from all the bitching for more and more (paid) maternity leave (because I want to be with my kids but we can't afford it).

In general women like not working. I've met few who have husbands that have the luxury of supporting them that don't push their jobs away as soon as they have kids, or even just so they can do volunteering and other unsustainable forms of activity instead of a breadwinning job. And it's no surprise, working mostly sucks, that's why traditionally men do it.

Back before no-fault divorce you could successfully avoid ever losing anything by just never giving your wife a fault to divorce you by; if your wife just up and divorced you it would be treated as a breach of contract and she would get nothing even if you made a lot more money than her and she relied on you entirely for all the essentials. When morality counted for a lot, you could hedge against loss by being moral. Nowadays divorces can happen for no reason at all and the higher earner is always treated like they were at fault, and that higher earner is almost always the man. You can even, in some states, get stuck paying alimony for life. You could end up in your 60s sending checks to a woman who would spit on your grave that you haven't even seen in decades. Prior to the 1860s, if your wife left you she didn't even get to keep the kids, you got those by default. A man today loses his money, his kids, and his freedom; big alimony checks mean you can never quit working. Men lose more in divorce than ever.

And all this is of course ignoring even earlier societies where a "divorce" would only ever occur if your wife got executed for some reason. You lose nothing at all in such a scenario, you keep your money and your kids, so all you've lost is your heretic wife.

I don't see how your second sentence corresponds to my post, obviously you can end up with alimony in a no-fault divorce, which is especially heinous in that you can do nothing wrong and still be punished. This is also a big part of men losing more; with divorce happening more frequently, more men lose money where once they would have lost nothing at all. Even if you could find a year where only one billionaire got divorced and "men" lost 10 billion dollars in one year, that'd still be better than a year where "men" only lost 1 billion in aggregate but that 1 billion was made out of a thousand broken marriages. The money is only one of the things you lose.

I am very happily married, neither of us controls the other, we spend all our time together because we genuinely enjoy it and want the others company, and both of us contribute equally to our life together. Pretty awesome actually.
