What is the best way to do a cult as an antagonist without just doing the usual "bust down the door and kill the high priest" route?
I was thinking a bit of how NOD has multiple cells and each one seems to be ready to act independently of the other, even having their own tactics and methods while still centered around one main goal. However having an enemy that seems to never be stopped because as long as their ideology can live they continue to push on feels like it would be more of a pain than anything to throw at the players, so I suppose my real question is: How do you make a proper cult/terror-group actually enjoyable to deal with without it feeling like a slog of constantly respawning enemies?

Hey /tg/, you've always been a good source to bounce ideas off of. Tomorrow I'm running a session of our 5E campaign where the players are currently on a boat heading across the sea.

I want an encounter where they spot a ship in distress, and it's suspicious how there's no people on board, as they approach it becomes apparent the "ship" is actually a disguised gargantuan jellyfish like the Man of War, which preys on real ships. Need help with encounter design, here's the facts:

+Average party 5th level, 5 members
+The nautical combat is relegated to narrative events, the players are basically on a stage that reacts to the environment for dramatic effect, not codified mechanics.
+I'm thinking the big threat are the stinging web of tendrils, but should this even be a players vs monster encounter or maybe more a series of tests against trap-like challenges?

All ideas and advice on lethality welcome, thanks in advanced.

What would be the best way to ensure a Generation Ship actually reaches its destination without the people inside killing themselves or going mad?

So I'm planning to DM my own campaign soon. I have only ever played a hand full of campaigns before with a few friends that played Pathfinder and Call of Chthulu. I'll be DMing for a group of people who have never played anything before. My question is what is a better starting ground 3.5 or 5e? Most of my friends that i played with when i did pathfinder said that they didn't like 5e but they never really explained why.
