Wrestling basically is roleplaying, yeah. Back in the day when people still believed it was real and not predetermined wrestlers were expected to keep up the act outside of the ring. Like if you played a heel you were expected to act like an asshole to fans to keep up the act. Guys who were feuding weren't allowed to be seen together in public. It's called "kayfabe" and it's still practiced in japan and mexico to a certain extent but not so much in the states. I remember watching this interview with jim cornette, an old heel manager who was an expert at riling up the fans. He was so good in fact he had to carry around a gun loaded with blanks because rednecks would literally group up and try to beat the shit out of him if they recognized him because of something his character said on tv. It's pretty crazy to think about.
