the apartment wasn't locked at all, he could have walked out the door at any moment.
He also wasn't given a single thing, he's naked for most of the series, he almost breaks down crying when he finally wins some shoes and tries them on. There's also a period where he finishes the big bag of rice he had won and almost starves to death. I also remember a moment where he loses it when he wins some food item because the flavor was so overwhelming since he hadn't eaten anything but rice for months.
This show left an impression on me.
