Because there is very little upwards mobility in terms of socioecomonic status. Why should I put more effort into my work, if some other incompetent cunt is going to be provided essentially the same amount that I am? There are countless parasites that contribute very little to society as a whole, yet I will be treated essentially the same as one. I receive less benefit in this system, unless I want to take advantage of it and contribute the bare minimum.
You either have a government/bureaucratic ruling class as has been what develops under governments attempting communism, or you have an oligarchy of rich capitalists that achieve similar results in most western democracies. One is exploitation of labor by a state sponsor and the other is exploitation of work by a corporate one. With the development of welfare states and the consolidation of industries by large corporations, the lines between state and private enterprise get very intermingled now. The corporate one has issues but offers me greater mobility in terms of my status, but it doesn't encourage my idea of what a meritocracy should be.
