When he was telling them faith without works is dead, he was talking about how believers of Christ are demanded by God to do certain things, like spreading the gospel.
James was pointing out that unless youre conducting yourselves as God expects us to act, the faith theyre trying to spread is dead.
He wasnt talking about salvation which DOES has many verses describing exactly what is requried to be saved.
Read Acts where the apostles are directly asked to plainly describe the requirememts for salvation and they told them this:

The Bible I usually read has the Hebrew/Aramaic part taken from Jew archives and the Greek part taken from preserved byzantine archives. It's considerable more precise than the pure modern Greek version that was used to translate KJV (malice apart).

You know the structure of Greek/Hebraic/Aramaic is very different from English... many passages (specially those from NT) doesn't translate well no matter how good the translation. If we are talking about KJV we need to include the malice and ill intentions on the list of difficulties.
