Countries developed their electrical infrastructures independently and never bothered to make a fully universal system.

We used to have 110v & 220v outlets EU style. It was confusing as shit. Now all electronics must be 220v and all outlets are similar to the UK outlet. Much simpler and cost efficient this way.
