Retina MacBook Pro's were the top of the line for basically any programming at the time (as far as laptops are concerned at least). Mac isn't great, but it having a unix terminal native is fairly nice when you do any sort of compsci/programming.

The fact is that Microsoft and co. heavily underestimated marketing and the stupidity of an average consumer, which is something Apple nailed. They even managed to persuade people that Mac is not a PC (="personal computer"). Basically Apple's image is an exclusive brands, while its marketing is targeted at the dumbest consumers.
