Africa is a VERY tribal society and Ian Smith said it best in his "great white tribe" speech - Whites in subsaharan africa are just another tribe. Just as a Mashona would never mix with a Matabele, a black african wouldn't mix with a white. This has changed somewhat recently but I can honestly say I have, in the years I lived in zimbabwe, a single mixed race or mixed-tribe couple, ever.
When I started university in America and saw mixed-race couples I was kind of shocked, that's absolutely unheard of back home. Blacks who mix with the opposite tribe are shamed, forced out of their villages, and completely ostracized from society. That's why there are less coloureds in zim than whites, even today.
