Battle games divide into 3 tiers: no-contact, full contact and helmet required.
Helm required
>SCA, EMP, HEMA, BoTN
Full contact (otherwise known as boffer sports)
>bel,dag (and amt is in the middle with minimal contact)
No contact
>LARP
I fight dag and bel now because armor is expensive but LARP and Amt have magic systems which are gay and cringy. In LARP you don't hit anyone and your weapons are for show plus you have to build a character sheet and get xp. Super gay. Amt has magic but they also make minimal contact to keep things lively. They're really fast but they don't hit hard and even if they graze you then you gotta take it. Bel and dag are full contact with boffer weapons, armor and shields. You have to use sufficient force for your hits and you can shrug of grazes and pussy hits. SCA and EMP use rattan and require full steel armor and helmets because of the full contact. BoTN is full armor, live steel and full contact. It's like the professional circuit for battle sports for rich people.
It's cool not many people know. LARP just gives us all a bad look especially since the movie role models.
Pay no mind you will get fucked up in any battle game besides amt or LARP.

I've had my nose broken 6 times in 5 minutes, dislocated shoulder during gladiator pit, nerve damage across both my shoulders, a few years ago we had a girl break her pelvis, Butch broke his arm last season and every season someone breaks something or loses their life. Last year a guy died from taking a headshot (not a legal shot in bel or dag but it happens you just keep going) and it snapped his neck. I've seen people get trampled in the charge, eyes poked out and there's always the chance someone twice your size will throw you to the ground. It's a full contact sport people get hurt I mean shit you don't even take hits toward death that don't hurt enough.
If you're a good fighter you won't run into this much. I once met a girl at amt practice (to work on my speed) and she wanted to see what bel hits were like. I feinted the upper shoulder so when she lifted her shield to block it I drilled one into her calf and she buckled over immediately. She never showed up at bel practice.
When I say you can get fucked up by a foam sword you really can get fucked up. There's a guy in Idaho that fended off 4 muggers with nothing but a regular stick just because he had years of dag training under his belt.
