I believe that shelving inner dialogue / monologue is used by humans when they enter into physically-demanding or "primal" states. It's a defensive mechanism that forces you to think on your feet. I think it can also be forced into being triggered by doing remedial work that keeps your mind from functioning (busy work), which can also include thinking about mind-numbing things--hence the liberal institutions' focus on illogical fields like women's studies and social justice. These fields, if examined objectively and logically, might have turned out very different, but instead, there's a large focus placed on emotion and how a person "feels" as opposed to what they "think". This ties back into herd mentality.

Losing your inner voice during certain times is fine by me--in fact, I find I think faster when I'm presenting to others or participating in sports, but ultimately, if we're to make meaning of our experiences in this world, we should not only want, but need to rely on our inner voices. Wordsworth, a famous poet, once mentioned the importance of writing prose as a secondary construction: in other words, "feel" in the moment and "think" after it.
