/wt/ Watch Thread, What Should Be Used For Modern Illumination Edition

This thread is about the appreciation of whorology and syphilitic radium thots, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Clara is waifu

I can't find her on linkedin or their site

I was looking for her on lange's social media. I didn't find her.

How do you like my NOMOS collection?

Looks nice

That’s because he said they would look good on your nubile teen crisis actor girlfriend

tfw clara only exists in the software of an autosigner

How could you make an Amphibia even more robust? Bullbars (or Zlatoust-style cage)? Tuna shroud from polyurethane for shock protection? Ultra expensive extra domed sapphire crystal? Somehow attaching a Panerai or Ploprof-style crown guard? What strap is the most indestructible?

Attached: g-shock_bullbars.jpg (829x621, 76K)

I refuse to believe it.
I am going to find her and marry her.

Favorite blue dial diver under five hunnit? Go!

What illumination is that?
I'm looking for a good, high performance illuminated watch preferably with waterproofness.
Maybe G-Shock is my only option, but I hope not.

It's radium, the best illumination ever conceived.

it's illegal now

I'm still happy with my tritium.

I've been looking for a nice blue dial watch for a while and I've just come across a vintage oris on a local trade site. Sorry for potato pic but what are your thoughts? Apparently the case and strap are new, the rest is original (will post back in a sec).

frankenwatch.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. Is there enough space between the hands to clear the tubes?

Just poo in the watch, Pajeet

What's a reddit ?

thanks lads. I'm new to all this so not sure what to look for in vintage

I feel bad for all the nubile teenage lesbian radium girls who spent their days fighting gun laws and the nights glowing as they licked pussies and wore radium glowing watches all the time with Swiss movement of coarse

If you adjust of the spacing and set out by planning to mount the tubes in a way that will clear than yes I’m sure it could be done

In other words just random hands with tritium on them are probably never going to fit but if you designed them from the get go to fit in an SKX I’m sure you could make it work

If you are new, you should get certain casio models, the ones that are often memed here. Than you go up a level: amphibia or vintage jap shit.
Than you could start thinking about vintage swiss, but you shouldn't because that money could get you something better (orient, the seikos...) or you save up more for a tudor/sinn/omega/r*lex.

Did you read the pastebin?

you have to research, and research and research the specific model if its vintage.

i'd wait to develop some taste in vintage watches and then go from there

Anybody else think that the current explorers numerals are far too contemporary and will age really badly?

Attached: image.jpg (1500x1001, 751K)

The font hasn't changed since the 14270 which came out like 30 years ago. I think it's fine.

it's not like the ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX will ever look silly

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep reading until I'm much more familiar with it all.
Yeah I did, I'm pretty confident with contempory stuff now (or at least researching it myself). Vintage just seems like another playing field entirely without a lot of gaps in info that need to be filled with one's own knowledge.

You could always start with an Omega constellation 561 or 564. Hard to go wrong with those if you do your research and there's zillions of examples and references out there.

head watchmaker was working past few days on this dope ass VC carriage clock. hour repeater, sonnerie and alarm.

Neat. Whatever happened with that clock with the unknown functions?

kys

oh yeah that, he said "I don't have the tools to work on something of this size and I really don't wanna spend the time making them. I know a clockmaker who'll do a good job."

I don't know what tools he was talking about tho.

Attached: 20180329_143859.jpg (354x631, 34K)

I still don't get what the fuck they were thinking with that. It's the kind of detail that would only appeal to some nouveau riche Arab/Chink and yet they slap it on what's otherwise the most understated watch in their lineup.

>What Should Be Used For Modern Illumination?
LED diodes obviously.

that tfw when made a mistake, sorry.

Lume shots?

it's to prevent faking, not a stylistic choice

Attached: 87F80ED1-CCC7-407E-A675-9AD66DD62626.jpg (4032x3024, 570K)

To be completely honest I don't understand the need for lume on watches, it never stays visible for more than an hour.
Sure it would be useful for someone who periodically visits a dark cave without any lamps..
Only good for lume shots and casual admiration.

Unless your lume is really shitty it should be easily visible for hours.

And it's a stupid choice because it was quickly faked anyway.

Good lume gets dim but still visible for hours if your eyes are adjusted. If I wake up in the middle of the night and it's totally dark I can still read some of my watches.

Confusing isn’t it?

I still don't understand why the numbers aren't lumed, to be honest.

Attached: DSC_5358.jpg (998x1500, 725K)

Gotta get tritium

This saves it a bit, but still, I would prefer this or just leds on quartz.

Don't the newer 214270s have lumed numerals?

I always thought the white part of the numerals were lume. I figured thats why they moved from the solid silver numbers to these with the white inner area. Why did they change??

The progression was lume painted numerals on the 1016, then applied numerals with normal white paint on the 14270 and 114270, then solid metal applied numerals on the early 214270, and now applied numerals with lume on the later 214270 which is what they should have done to begin with.

the fact that the numerals are thinner than the indices just looks bad.

not the case on the 1016, the only good looking explorer

You are absolutely right. I’d love to see a mock up where the markers were as slim as the numbers.

I may or may not attempt to get the bracelet off today

Attached: IMG_20180330_101638.jpg (3480x2610, 2.46M)

Attached: PowerlessSmartEquestrian.webm (640x360, 1.17M)

why is it doing this?

was thinking of one of these as a simple first soldering project

Good luck mate, probably best to accept you'll scratch the underside of the lugs someday so why not today? Are you going to take one of the pins on the buckle out first so that it's easier to get to the springbars? I always find bracelets really tricky when they're all connected up.

Attached: IMG_20180330_005923_1.jpg (1602x2284, 845K)

yeah I might just do that. I took the bracelet off the skx real easy once I had the right tool, but I can't even work out how to get a good contact on this one atm. I've read online that the hammy bracelet can be very difficult to remove too

shieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Attached: shieeeeeet.png (659x963, 44K)

It does this once per hour to cycle all of the digits to make sure they all get powered occasionally.

it's a good soldering project. I recommend any of the clocks from PVelectronics.

Why the fuck did they ban the guy for talking about watch paint and the bulovia moon watch?

It's not rocket surgery, breh

Why would you put this much money into an amphibia?
BEST option is to buy a dozen of them and throw the broken ones out

He meant his brain

Any retard can fix a clock

Some have made bezels with crystal-covering bars. Sapphire is being developed by a third party currently. Remove the rotor, less moving parts the better. Leave the plastic movement spacer. Use a case with crown guards, but replace with a full steel crown.

Neat

Amphibia + vodka hydro mod when

Thanks for the recommendation, I've been meaning to make a Nixie tube clock but never got around to searching for kits

looks like a 2000s era casio or seiko quartz

well my small tool doesn't seem to be big enough to get a grip on the springbar and the big tool doesn't fit through the gap. I feel like I need another tool here or I'm just going to break it

Attached: 0a5b7844-fc52-4def-891b-5461bcf51b83.jpg (700x700, 102K)

god fuckin damn I got the first side out in 5 seconds and now I've been struggling for 20mins with this one. I've got one side of the springbar out but the tension and lack of gap makes it just impossible to grip the other side

Attached: IMG_20180330_132439.jpg (2976x3968, 2.36M)

nigger have you really been trying to remove a fucking bracelent for like 3 threads straight?

Take a close-up of the scratched up lugs when you're done being a hamfisted retard

I've removed other bracelets easily. I am giving up on this one for the moment because the tool is shredding my thumb

Looking for a mechanical black dress watch under $200 dollaroos, like a proper dress watch it has to be 38mm or under, it would be nice if it has manual wind, but I can live without it I guess.
I've been looking at something elegant like the orient bambinos but smaller, like the orient star AF02002B, but while it is really nice, is between 350 and 400 dollars.

Kabaclyde(?) on reddit is the best place on the internet imo for vintage watches. nothing too cheap like ebay shit but i havnt really seen a bad review of their shit.

Get a fine forked end tip.

like this? Its what I'm using. I can get one side of the springbar out but the other just won't budge and I'm applying quite a bit of force
