The X220 is too thick, I need a thin and light travel laptop with decent specs.
Money isn't much of a concern but I don't want to go for the Dell Xps 13 which looks like it would break easy. I need something solid, is there a modern lenovo alternative

Hey guys. I got an X220 off of ebay, almost 2 months ago. Not a great deal, but not a horrible deal ( I know I could have done far better, I get it ). i7, 8gb of ram. No HDD, cord or battery, $135, shipped. Anyhow. I get the laptop. Get what I need to get it going ( threw 256gb Samsung 840 PRO SSD, cause, spare ), got a charger ( $15 ), 9 cell battery ( $19 ). whatever. After about 4 days, fan error. Beeps twice, fan error, shuts down. Sends back to sell for " repair ". Get laptop back. Right out of the box, same error. Send laptop back for refund. Get full refund. Get mail today. Laptop sent back to me. So. now I have less than $50 in this sort of functional laptop.

TL;DR

Where is the best source to get a replacement fan / heat sink for an X220 and I'll fix it myself? Also, do you have any other recommended upgrades for it? Not against spending a few bucks on it, because I don't really have shit into it at this point.

Ebay or aliexpress
I'd say ebay
3rd Gen or newer X1 carbon
Or
T450s (or T440s w touchpad swap if you can handle it)

The touchpad swap requires 0 tools, 0 adhesives.

Its something a 10 year old could do.

You just remove 4 screws, and screw down the new one.

x1 isn't "solid" and doesnt have dock abilities.

Everyone now adays wants a thinner device than the x220 and I dont blame them.

Get the t440s user. Barely any more expensive than a t430. (but you save alot of electricity with the t440s so price comes out to a wash)

And if you want fhd ips the t440s is cheaper than a t430

I seen a few on ebay. Wasn't sure if there was a more reputable source out there. But I will also check aliexpress also. Thanks!

I mean worst case you return it
Ebay has good buyer protection

>full magnesium chassis
>not solid
(You) too
Also some people actually have washing machines and stoves in their houses
The literal 5 cents you save daily is gonna need a long time to break even with a T430

very true

You break even as soon as you decide to get FHD IPS, thats the point.

>buying stuff for the more expensive product makes it cheaper
What?

Yet another reason why X230 is
>superior
to X220.
Someone explain to me why people still buy a nearly 7 year old outdated, POS laptop that absolutely can't game.

Attached: x230 gaming rig.png (1194x838, 644K)

The T450s looks like it weighs in at 1.6kg
Pretty good weight for travel, is there anything else lighter or does anyone have experience with the T450s

This isn't /v/. Enjoy your (You).

If you buy an x230 to play games, you are the idiot.
I keep my x220 around because it still work.

X1 carbon 3rd or newer is lighter

I own a X230
If you're willing to game on that you better set your expectation pretty low

No thanks

pls kill self numale cuck

You probably own a modern thinkpad too

T430 with 7-row, 3920XM
P71 1505V6/P4000M/FHD
X1C6

I had several gaming laptops and an X1C5 in the mix

The new thinkpads are amazing devices

Dont get me wrong, I loved my x60 but it serves me no modern purpose.

Imagine using something so inferior to my t440s? I cant.

I have my eyes on the p52s, anything bad about it? I can upgrade to the 4k panel later on correct?

Should I buy a second a x220 to upgrade from an i5 2520m to AN i7 2640m, will I notice the boost ?
I can nab one for under £200

Attached: 1500528627845.png (483x487, 196K)

Nobody buys a ThinkPad to play games on, the only concept presented here is that it's possible to do so on a xx30 over an xx20. Seriously, complaining about options basically makes you a fucking macfag. Kill yourselves.

To be honest, I do rather enjoy being cuckolded, much like my t440s.

writing on that thing must be glorious.

>tfw chiclet modern-era ultrabook keyboard

Where to find X220t's that can be shipped to Germany? On ebay there are only two offers that aren't horrendously expensive but they are already pretty worn

Have you looked at the kleinanzeigen (no idea what that translates to)?

>kleinanzeigen
That was the correct translation and a good idea as well. Brought up a lot more results than I'd thought. Thanks user!

Attached: huh.jpg (1280x720, 72K)

Got everything set up on my T420s, and I guess this battery is a little fucky, only holds about half capacity. But I still actually got my shit set up, so I'm feeling pretty damn good.

Refurbished t420 is quite expensive in my country so I'm thinking of buying a used one in the UK or Germany. What should be a good price for a used t420 in good condition? Let's say what would be a good price for an i3-2350M model and for a i7-2620M?

"classified ads"

These are the specs of my X220 Tablet, any idea on why it gets so hot and the fan starts spinning at top speed even if I'm just scrolling Jow Forums? I have changed the thermal paste no more than 2 months ago.

Attached: Speccy.png (674x532, 62K)

brainlet here.
I've heard you can put an 3rd hard-drive in a T420. How can I achieve this?

Has anyone gotten multitouch (two finger scrolling and whatnot) to work on an X300 running Linux? Particularly Arch? I've been trying every fix I can find on the web for the last five or six hours and I've got nothing to show for it. Shit's driving me crazy.

P.S. I work on my pad for a few hours and you guys descend into namefagging and OP wars. Just don't reply to namefags and tripfags and they'll get bored. They subsist on attention.

Has anybody got a picture of the asian traps with an emacs tee on?

about toughness:

Is the X series less tough than the T series?

can i still beat the thief with it if it tries to steal it from me?

Finally got Palememe installed and now I don't have to worry about Firefox eating up my memory

Why would you ruin a keyboard by writing on it? What is this, the late 80s?

Still dual core. No point in it. Slightly larger cache and higher clock speed. Very minimal increase.

You are a retard who shouldn't have any financial power.

I've got a legitimate question for you fa/g/gots, this isn't a troll or an attempt at sealioning: is it viable in 2018 to use something like a T420/X220 or older ThinkPad as your main device? I bought a maxed out T420 in 2016 for €350 from a Belgian eBay user (I'm from Ireland, don't have much choice). I originally got 16GB RAM for it, ran into major issues with the laptop coming into contact with heavy rain, but it still works (a RAM module got damaged so now I just use 8GB, it's more than enough for most stuff). I kinda cucked myself by getting the version with the NVIDIA Optimus card, but everything works fine (I've tried out Windows 10, Ubuntu and Linux Mint, inb4 bad security) and the machine is good: but the relatively low resolution of the screen (1600x900) is annoying, and the keyboard gets clogged with dirt very easily. I also fucked up on setting BIOS passwords and forgetting them, I don't have the EEPROM reader thing to reset the password. Should I get another older ThinkPad with no NVIDIA graphics, hold onto what I have, or get something else entirely? I'll likely be running Win10 and latest LTS Ubuntu, I'm a CS student whomst needs more stability than the memes of Arch (it's good but I don't need it) and I also need music production stuff like Ableton Live (which I already have).

Attached: flat,800x800,075,f.u1.jpg (507x800, 78K)

why would you want to get anything else? you have a maxed out T420, you're livin the dream

>ls
fucking lmao

Between 150 and 200 euros if mint condition.

I just purchased an as-new T420 (1600x900, i5-2520m) for 170 euros.

Europe is expensive.

>Still dual core
I had to check myself yeah you're right, my system monitor has always shown 4 cores rusing me

I'm not some retard looking at larger numbers and going "me want bigger"
Moving from an i5 2500k to an i7 2600k on my desktop was a huge improvement for video editing and I assumed it'd have more cores

Attached: 1512982089125.jpg (490x497, 177K)

So when Thinkpads inevitably become black macbooks, what is our alternative?
Dell? HP?
Will no company make laptops to this standard again?

Attached: hello.gif (540x594, 1.94M)

What you consider standard is considered to be obsolete by normies thus companies will keep producing thin and useless Facebook machines

Is there any thinkpad like elitebook cult to get some info?

sorry friend, you're gonna have to move up to something bigger if you want more performance

afaik none of the X series thinkpads have quadcore processors

Do QM processors use much more power when compared to regular dual cores?

thoughts on the t580? with 16gb, i7, 512gb ssd it's around 1.7k USD. a similarly optioned xps 15 is around 1.6k but lacks the dock and an ethernet port i think. it's not for gaming

Sort of,
At idle you'll basically get same battery
Maybe 10 minutes less
At full load you'll definitely feel the extra 10w

Is replacing the screen on the T450 the same process as the T440 or T450s?

2.5" in main bay, 2.5" in caddy replacing dvd drive, msata ssd in slot beside ram

Excuse me for being a brainlet, but what is this?

Attached: IMG_20180330_104818.jpg (3120x4160, 2.36M)

table lock

kensington lock slot

>contact with heavy rain
>RAM module got damaged
>cucked myself by getting the version with the NVIDIA Optimus card
>clogged with dirt
>fucked up on setting BIOS passwords and forgetting them

think of it this way, user. you're a fucking human disaster and any lesser laptop would already be in a thousand mustard-smeared pieces on the floor of your subsidized housing allotment. continue to abuse what you already own until it dies completely, then go out and get another one. continue until you die in a deep fryer accident at work or you learn not to be such a complete fuckup

It sure is. Thanks!

Faggot

I have a 500 dollar budget and I really like the T440s. I will be using the laptop for 2D animation, audio production and the usual browsing stuff.

Is this the right laptop for me?
I understand that socketed are the easily upgraded ones but is it impossible to upgrade soldered components?

I had a T440p but the seller lied about the condition so I sent it back. Now I’m curious about a slimmer model.

That msata ssd is good? I was about to buy an evo 850 in ebay but the seller got out of stock...

i have one of these in my closet, and iseries.
what linux distro would be best to put on it?

looks like a 32gb jobber out of an old tablet or something. just get whatever's cheap since it'll be limited to at sata2 speed

£200 budget,
needs to play videos in 1080p, and have a lot of firefox tabs open.

what thinkpad am i looking at?

what part of Ireland? Used to live there and hated it with a passion, disgusting privileged women, retarded drunks and nothing works. Also you overpaid big time for that laptop. Make better friends in Europe or USA.

>t440s
No, stop falling for this. Buy a T430 and I've saved you $400.

Just finished upgrading my t430 with an i7-3720qm and a 1600x900 screen.

I want to make sure I correctly applied the thermal paste.

What software do you guys recommend to monitor CPU temps?

Just installed Ubuntu on my P51 and wtf is wrong with Nvidia Linux drivers? The Intel GPU runs fine, but the Nvidia one disables secureboot (which is not really an issue) and introduces freaking tearing.

Tried installing bumblebee but then I get tearing too even when not specifically using the Nvidia GPU.

Also I don't get why you need bumblebee when you can just switch between Intel/Nvidia in the Nvidia settings.

TL;DR what's the way to go with hybrid graphics on Linux?

Attached: f25.gif (460x259, 2.39M)

Speed fan on Windows, lm-sensors on linux.
Remember that most thermal paste has a curing time before reaching maximum performance, so its a good idea to run a stress test for a few hours a day, prime95 is a very hot one.

Help a brainlet out ;_;

By “falling for this” what do you mean? Is the 440 series overpriced?

Anyone have that picture saved where T430 compatible cpus are compared with modern ones and there isnt much difference in performance.

HWiNFO64 is probably the best. You can monitor a lot more than just temps

That's really expensive, look for a refurbished p51 first.

>worst keyboard
>worst trackpad
>soldered ram
Can't remember if t440 was last with soldered cpu or not

i suppose

i guess the machine can handle the incompetence of a thotticus such as i

disgusting privileged everything and seemingly everyone. there's a large middle class i've never been part of, although i may be soon. nothing indeed works. i'm originally from the south east, economically disadvantaged. a fiercely, violently conservative area. drug problems relating to Dublin gangland stuff, consistently high suicide rate. no nearby inspiration or support for tech stuff let alone anything else. right now i live near Dublin and it's a lot better, even if rent is pricey as fuck and there's lots of yuppies/wannabe yuppies around.

i'm well aware i overpaid bigtime well before i made the decision to pay. i had no other choice if i wanted the T420 at the time, other european prices were similar. shortly after i bought it, places like CEX and other tech chains started to sell refurbished X220s and T420s at massively inflated prices and lower specs, higher than what i paid. i'm not happy with ireland, i also hate it with a passion (i don't like varadkar, he abandoned his own self-interests in fear and sucks up to trudeau, coveney would make a better leader) mostly because culture and counterculture are both at a unprecedented low since the inception of the state. also our public infrastructure and medical systems are fucked, and society is still very sexually repressed, still reeling from stuff like widespread institutionalised clerical child sex abuse (it's still happening) and the Magdalene laundries and mother and baby homes (they closed in 1996). homosexuality was legalised in 1993, divorce in 1995. disney's fantasia was banned until the year 2000. it's boring, snobby, and stuck up as fuck. i intend to move to the uk or germany as soon as it's viable for me to do so. i'm lucky to have good friends, it's quite evident that a lot of people i know don't, though moving would certainly help.

tl;dr yeah the maxed out T420 is one thicc bih

thank you mod for shelving that awful idab thread

left 6 years ago and never looked back. you could even look into continuing studying abroad if at all possible. I found out the hard way that a degree from there was worthless abroad

From what I understand the 440p has socketed processor, 440s does not. I actually kinda like the newer trackpad because I rarely use the nub.
Can’t deny the keyboard.

But pretty much it comes down to upgradability for price?

I suggest you read up more on it. The buttons are integrated into the trackpad which a lot of people hate because of constant misclicks.

i Just bought this (Actual Photo) a very good price with fully working Battery, i had an X240 very old computer compared to this.

Is it good idea install Hackitosh on this?

Make sure to get one that actually fits the laptop, though. Some of the generic Chinese ones don't have bezels that fit properly. They still work fine if you're a function > form kinda guy.

I used it for a couple weeks when I had the T440p until pic related happened (I literally never moved it off my desk and rested my palm on the corner). I liked it, no misclicks, gesturing worked great. Although I haven’t experienced the glory that is the older trackpad. Honestly I’m a bit of a design faggot too and I think the 440s is sexy.
