I'm debating whether or not to delete all of my HDD clean. Deleting all of my music, movies and games sound painful, but I know for a fact I rarely ever use like 90% of them on a regular basis. And I can just download the thing that I happen to remember that I want to listen to or watch or play.

However, it is kind of a hard decision to just pull the trigger and finish it all. Have you ever felt this way or have you ever needed to delete your whole collection of, say, anime or porn? It is kind of dumb that I feel so attached to digital media that I can easily re-download again.

If this existential debate has thought me something is that I need to shell out money for more physical media like CDs, DVDs and actual palpable games. The 'GotG V. 2' blu-ray is pretty cheap on Amazon right now.

I accidently deleted lots of what I thought was important data recently.
Since then I haven't even remotely had a desire to use that data so I'm not worried.
If you have photos that you want archived then just print them. They'll last longer that way.

This actually never occurred to me. It's been a while. I do have some gems I need to preserve.

Taking photos definitely lost some of its magic after film rolls where quickly phased out by digital methods. I rarely ever take family photos like I used to.

Kek I'm doing the opposite. Buying lots of storage, and putting my data into redundant RAID setups

Storage is cheap, why would you want to delete it all?
I hold on to my media because sites get shut down over copyright bullshit all the time. I've lost stuff that I can't seem to find anywhere anymore. I also back up stuff like console exclusive digital games when possible, because their associated networks will inevitably shut down some day.
I often wonder what games will eventually be 'lost to history' because of DRM protection and the shut-down of any services that provide them.

Before pulling the trigger please aim it at your head

Dunno OP, I often wander this myself.
The fact that this TB sized near worthless pack of data is there makes me feel as if my room was figuratively full of garbage. It's pure chaos man

I do worry about that. I don't think I'm deleting my downloaded Virtual Console games, Nintendo is very special about these kind of things.

They actually got EmuParadise to delete some of the GameCube first party games [last time I checked], which I had downloaded but ended up deleting. And torrents of NGC or Wii aren't particularly well seeded, unfortunately.

Thank you for the bump. :^)

I do feel like that sometimes. I'm more restless about the fact that these media isn't being consumed. I used to share movies with my relatives, but honestly they don't give a fuck and it's not worth my time trying to get them to watch something.

Looking back on it I'm sorry for saying that user, you are a wonderful person and you have plenty of reasons to live. Don't aim at your head when you pull the trigger.

While availability might seem good now, there's no way of knowing how it will be in the future. Torrent sites get taken down, seedboxes might be next. Interest might dwindle leaving you with 0 seeds...
A good music collection is sorted and tagged appropriately, that alone takes a good amount of effort.

Don't be wasteful, if you need more storage, you can get 3 TB for 75 dollars.
Getting the physical media is something you should do for your favorite stuff.

I've deleted so much good porn from my teenage years (mid 00s) that's borderline impossible to find now.

I accidentally deleted some old documents that I didn't need over a year ago, and to this day it still bothers me that I don't have them. Deleting a bunch of stuff doesn't feel liberating, its something you regret forever. At least I do.

printing photos is certainly worthwhile and I recommend it. No reason to delete the file the prints came from though.

I'm always format my HDDs, because I think what my data is useless and anyway I can re-download them

Yeah but Spotify has 90% of music I like tagged and organized with zero effort from my side and the rest obscure 10% I can live without if I'm being honest with myself

You’re probably feeling anxiety over your data. Do what makes you feel better, but starting with tagging your media will help you feel better. After organizing you’ll have reflected on what you really want to keep and feel better.

Download a good music tagger, get rid of shit-quality files, and enjoy the feeling of being self-sufficient. Paying for a streaming service presents its own set of problems, such as sound quality.

Keep your music. You can prune it later but don't mass delete it. Keep photos too, Google Drive/Photos is helpful.
Keep 10 movies you'd like to watch on a rainy day when you have no internet.
Keep 10 games in Steam/however many you actively play if more than that.

I think I'll buy an external HDD, at least 5TB to store pretty much all my 'essential' data.

I know this thread is about to die, but if anyone can recommend a very, very reliable solution it would be greatly appreciated. I want this data to last, however I don't fully trust HDD reliability based on past experiences.

Buy another hard drive.

Beh - until you've got like 8 drives (currently easily available for reasonablre cost per tb in even at 8-16tb per drive) you are not even allocating more physical space to your data than a pretty unintrusive midi tower can handle.

And the cost of a few hdd is worth the time saved on detailed data management. Yea, eventually you may be dropping some tb of old data as bulk delete but its more efficient if you can stage it for deletion and just drop it if you never were looking for it in 3 years or so.

DO NOT DELETE HARD TO FIND FILES

THE CLOUD IS NOT AN ARCHIVE, TORRENTS DISAPPEAR

Anything other than rare stuff, delete. We need people to archive stuff for the future. There is shit out there that I've been looking for for a long time that seemingly just doesn't exist on the internet anymore.

Sort it and then it becomes valuable.
