ok

>having a wider display = adhd
might as well throw out that 16:10 monitor and bring back 4:3 CRT monitors

I do find it funny how the "minimum to be productive" (the excuse they give) is always whatever is new on the market.

Large landscape + smaller portrait monitor is the comfiest thing ever, could be symptom of aids and I wouldn't stop using it.

Stop being a poor nigger

I agree. They gave me a second monitor at work and I never use it. It's just to look cool in desktop threads

Recommend me a small monitor that's good for use as a secondary, portrait display. Preferably something that's designed to be oriented that way, or at least can rotate.

I have bad vision though

I have actually thought about getting one 4k monitor with a tiling WM or something. The only reason I have more than one is because it's a shame to leave an old one laying around unused when you could use it as a reference screen or somthing

I'm a draftsman and it's essential for work. One screen is filled only by the 3D model space or 2D pages. Ideally I'd fill another screen with object structures, layer structures and properties, but I only have two screens, so I have to limit these things to half a screen so that I can use the other half for reference technical drawings, images or pdfs which I would otherwise throw on a THIRD screen.

reminding you Jow Forums that not using tiling window manager is also a symptom of ADHD

>reference screen
Good idea. I do a lot of digital art. I don't use my second monitor, but this would be a good use for it.

having good headphones also a symptom of ADHD?

Great for porn eh lefty?

This all the way. A portrait is perfect to have scrolling pages like email and irc open in the corner. Maximum comfy

>Multiple windows open are a symptom of ADHD.
How is this sentence less true from yours OP?

i think its bullshit when they buy 2 1080p monitors instead of a single 1440p. its the same amount of pixels, on half the screen space. if you arent retarded you would utilize it as though it where 2 1080p screens.

Do you ever stop shaking your head side to side as you read things?

I think it's about peripheral vision. For example in this pic the right screen is responsible for watching changed files and re-running compilation/tests. The thing is, 90% of the time I don't have to look at it because my peripheral vision tells me if it failed or passed. Only if it failed do I glance there to see the exact error.

Same for the left screen, which most of the time is switched to an IRC client which lets me notice new messages with my peripheral vision.

Also, the most important reason to have multiple screens is that it makes you look like a 1337 h4x0r.

Sounds like a stressful way to use a computer.

why would help desk need 3 monitors
also the phone is very old user why wont they buy you an iphone x or something instead of this obsolete trash

you could use notifications instead

At that time I was a senior system dev user. Also, I picked blackberry on purpose because it has much better battery life.

Not really, but to each their own I guess. I've always considered my setup very comfy and chill.

Keyboards name.

Landscape is for regular use and portrait is for a picture of your waifu of course
Any other setup is gay

It's pretty sweet. The trackpoint works really well, and when mine broke in transportation when moving to a new house they sent me a new sensor for free, which is really nice of them.

not this phone, the big boy

Ah, you were referring to my personal HTC M8? I use it because it hasn't broke yet. I've been using it pretty much form the release(2014) and it's been great. Never had an issue with it. Why would anyone upgrade their phone if their current one works fine?

Thanks

no, the big big boy in the back

bull shit. it's a serious performance upgrade when writing a research paper or filling a spreadsheet.
no need to switch screens etc. also if you do editing or anything of the sorts you can have your files read for drag and drop in the other panel.

if anything op you are a symptom of outdated archetypes.
step into the future you damn idiot. 2 screens is master race

>Multiple monitors are a symptom of ADHD.
ROFL it's a symptom of i'm watching TV while browsing the web

Ooooooh, that, I forgot that's even there because I haven't used it in a long time. The team I was part of in the beginning did large scale even management(essentially helpdesk but on ENTERPRIZZZZE scale for huge services), and we had desk-phones as a backup if anything else failed. Just some additional redundancy.

This has to be the worst possible setup. It's a setup to maximize distraction. If I wanted somebody to get absolutely nothing done, set him up for failure, this is what I would give them.

>IRC client which lets me notice new messages with my peripheral vision
Every time somebody writes something on irc, you get distracted. Whatever mental task you were doing, you have to begin again.

also
>having smartphone on your desk
If you had any idea of how human brain works, you'd have placed it out of sight long ago

this is unironically solid copy pasta

Funny that you say that considering I contributed about 45% of code in my team of 6. Each person tailors a setup to their own way of doing things, that was optimal for me.

But I agree, IRC is a distraction, which is why I rarely had it even on the left screen, and never configured for it any notifications, because it would just jolt me out of my coding zone. That was useful only when I was doing on-call shifts.

Are you using a fucking letter opener to grind up your weed?

Nvm spotted the grinder

Its really nice to have docs/terminal/web/book/whatever in a secondary display, and editor on your primary.

Having a huge display is nice, but most window managers only splitting in halves or quarters. On top of that you're losing quite bit of screen real-estate by sharing it among 2/4 different applications at once. Having to alt+tab scroll can be a pain/time sink at times.

>all these people convinced to buy two of a product they originally only wanted one of

You probably also buy marked up cables and own an inkjet printed.

Really activates those almonds.

Good for you. I'm not saying having multiple monitors is bad, it's more about how you use them. Monitor with something distracting on it is a net negative, even if one occasionally uses it for something useful like email.
Having lot of stuff going on screens in front of you and constantly tasks switching gives an illusion of productivity but isn't real productive.

>inb4 talking about productivity on Jow Forums
yes the ironing

Ackhually, I didn't even *want* one monitor, but I needed it, anything after that is wanting.

It's almost like you can move your eyes without moving your head.

What specs does your workstation have?

good thing I have a neck

no meme tier mechanical keyboard either. Just a regular microsoft keyboard with an ergonomic design.

It's actually a symptom of lazyness and even the best wms being shit at changing windows/the brain chosing watching into another direction over switching the context on one screen.

I'd rather check my mails after every productive unit of development on another screen.

Actually not true, only requirement is that the screens have the same size and alignment.
But since my primary display has to have enough screen real estate and there are no halved monitors, go figure.

they're also an indicator of having a job

>Having lot of stuff going on screens in front of you and constantly tasks switching gives an illusion of productivity but isn't real productive.
Well, yes, but I don't know why would someone just do a lot of switching without having the need to do it, sounds like something someone with actual ADHD would do.

>the ironing
I think it's a meme nowadays that only unemployed or lazy people browse Jow Forums. That might have been true at the beginning, but many people here nowadays are 30-40 and in the prime of their careers.

If I remember correctly it was the higher end HP EliteBook 840 G3 with a dock. It did give me some trouble when docking on linux though. Sometimes I had to dock-undock-dock-undock-dock-undock to get it to detect the screens, but other than that it was a pretty sweet laptop.

>ADHD
The people having trouble focusing are the ones with ADHD, doofus. So, people with ADHD shouldnt have multiple screens. People without attention issues are fine with multiple screens.

>productive
Multiple monitors have many uses for productivity, like webdev for example. Anything where you're looking at a document while working on something else. detailed video editing. etc.

But computers are for more than work. I have a job that supplies me with money for some nice monitors, but I never do work at my PC at home. It's a entertainment and hobby station, and guess what... Multitasking is fun. Watching videos while doing other things is fun. Seeing who is talking on voip and seeing when I get messages on chat services is fun. Seeing what's going on on my home server with a glance is nice. There's no downside here.

>I don't know why would someone just do a lot of switching without having the need to do it, sounds like something someone with actual ADHD would do

Everyone does it to some extent, not just people with adhd. Human mind is incapable of concentration. You can try this yourself, take your right hand and stare at it, focus on it with your mind. Sooner or later your mind wonders to something unrelated, you have been staring at your hand but thinking something completely different. If you have distractions around you the more certain this happens and the shorter your attention span is.

Not to mention how limited people are to noticing how their own minds play tricks on them. Woman enters room, everyone claims and genuinely believes that they didn't look at her tits. Only they did, camera which recorded the eye movements showed everyone literally eye fucked her for some fractions of a second.

Attached: 1518854547121.jpg (851x469, 43K)

What you are describing happens when one is not focused on any task/problem. When my mind is occupied with a specific problem I'm trying to solve my mind does not wander. I guess it does for most people, but I'm sure it's not as much as when you just stare at your hand without purpose.

28" 2560x1440 masterrace reporting in

Literally the only time I ever want a second monitor is if I'm trying to follow some sort of guide or set of instructions other than that it's pointless.

> falling for the neck meme

>Have actual diagnosed ADHD
>Had to do different types of training, therapy, tutoring and THEN medication in order to help me function like a normal person
>It's still hard, but I get by

I have a single monitor. Two would actually be beneficial. I lose track of so much of what I'm doing on one screen. Sometimes I'll get halfway through an email, 1/4 of the way through a video, then start cleaning my desk, only to stop that to finish that important email (I never do).

Two might help if I can organize my "in progress" and "to-do" tasks into separate workspace.

We'll see tho lads.

just get a 3:2 screen and live happily

DUDEWEEDLMAO

The fucking fans on those machines will eventually go out, it's sounds like a car having a stroke

That's true, it did have a particularly loud fan, but I mostly work with headphones on, like most, so whatever.

How does the meth they give you not help you focus?

It helps, but it's not what you'd expect. It enables me to feel "calm" and like I'm no longer a slave to my impulses. Contrary to what people tell you, adderall doesn't make you tweak out, at least if you actually need to take it. It instead makes it so you can finally fucking calm down and just like... be comfortable with things.

It's still on me to focus and do the work. ADHD is shit and every day is a battle for normalacy.

Having to compare 4 metal samples after treatment, with multiple pictures of each sample on a microscopic level, I'd have to agree. Grabbing a 21:9 screen let me take a look at all of those at the same time. Also had an old 16:9 monitor to do all the writing in. Unironically GOAT.

I don't believe that's true.
Wouldn't matter much for me anyways, I have ADHD and I'm happy with triple monitors.

>volcano
>faggot

>big 16:10 monitor
>nice 'board
>lots of mouse buttons
>some 'phones for listening to tunes at work

>volcano

This
2x1080p is only 12% more pixels than 1x1440p, but takes up almost twice the space. Multiple monitors are very overrated. Seriously not worth the price.

640x480 or mentally retarded

Stop being logical.

nice polycom

I still don't get the purpose of a vertical screen.

I have four total and I love it. Three are stacked on top of each other and one is vertical and to the side.

>bottom monitor for gaming and normal use
>center monitor for chat window/music
>top monitor for what I'm watching
>side monitor for web browsing/reading/Jow Forums
mostly Jow Forums
With the exception of MMOs, I find multiple monitors annoying. At work I do have 2 monitors on my wall, but 1 is for test machines, not both to the same machine.

I have adhd and I use 3 monitors. Fuck you OP, let me live my life.

Is IPS a meme?

It's comfy to read documents on them, and you can keep your emails, etc. there.

ADHD doesn't even exist. Just a (((disorder))) used to push amphetamines onto children so that they'll continue to buy and take their entire lives.

Anyone else notice it's always winfags that have multiple monitors?

because it took forever for XOrg to figure multi-monitor shit out

Always pointing your eyes to the side is a good way to go blind.

>muh vertical display
You know if you get a single big monitor, you can use a tiling WM and get TWO vertical displays in one without any bezels.

This. Reading articles has never been comfier.

Attached: 1484863783697.gif (857x994, 427K)

I have that but the portrait monitor is significantly smaller so everything I move over to it ends up extremely tiny compared to the landscape.

Clean your desk you dirty nigger

Nice gear but that cubicle seems lifeless.

There's no use for more than one monitor dipshits you can move windows around on your one large screen, how dumb are you. Using separate monitors as your window manager this is some grandma level idea

>Multiple monitors are a symptom of ADHD.
Prove it.

There's no use for anything more than 640x480 res screens you can use scrollbars to pan around if anything larger than that is displayed, how dumb are you. Using larger res monitor as your window manager this is some grandma level idea

Gaymen detect

It's not a cubicle it's an open space, and it's far from lifeless, the people there were fun to hang around with. Pic is from right next to my desk.
