It seems a bit overkill for desktop usage... wouldn't something lightweight like Firejail do? While maybe not providing as much isolation as Qubes it can at least restrict access to sensitive files which should be enough for most people.

Meltdown isn't an issue. Spectre variant 1, on the other hand, is probably impossible to patch and does affect Qubes.
