not really 'old internet' (depending on how far back you define that), but YTMND pages were kindof like memes before memes became a thing ytmnd.com/

The owner of this site died 8 years ago, the site is left exactly as it was.

Don't bother old internet is too "cringe" and "reddit" for normalfags that come here now

If you're talking about the hobbyist aesthetics just browse some of the sites hosted on neocities.org

Its not just about aesthetics, its about pages that aren't bloated to shit loaded up with client-side scripts, that aren't made by people just looking to drive traffic and ad revenue, and made by average joes rather than some sterile shit made by some super duper web guru with his fancy frameworks.

The old internet was made by ordinary people, the new internet is consolidated and rather elitist as the demand for more aesthetic complexity increases to the point that you need to be a full on programmer to build a website just to achieve an aesthetic that will be taken seriously. Yes im rambling a bit but you get what i mean

It also didn't appeal to FOMO and other human foibles modern web paradigms appeal to and manipulate.

slashdot.org

This site was great back in the early 2000s.

>He hasn't heard of Wix.com where you can easily create a free website exactly the way you want. With Wix, you get the whole package - sophisticated website builder, complete customization, reliable web hosting, domain names, and with our new app, you can monitor the website activity from virtually anywhere. It's so simple even we wamyn, can create our own websites. Computers aren't even that hard honestly. It's just toxic masculinity keeping us down.

Looking at this and how all the top headlines are actually pretty diverse in the areas they cover as well as all being pertinent news to the global stage makes me not even want to think about the top10 for each year lately.

>scaruffi.com/
Holy shit could this guy be any more obnoxious

What's wrong with him?

Not only that but just how fucking FAST the page loads. This is the future we could have had, where increases in system strength lead to improvements in usability and speed, instead it feels like shits getting slower and slower. XP loads only slightly slower off an ancient HDD than Ubuntu does from an SSD. Fucking sick of bloat; might just become a neo-luddite and use only old computers and software.

deathclock.com/

spoopy

Sometimes it feels like computers are getting slower rather than faster. I remember going to Linux because it had more features and was faster than XP, now I've gone back to Windows 7 because it has more features for its speed than current Linux distros. How the fuck did such a situation come about?

yes, he could be like that watermelon fagget

That's literally hobbyist websites. Again, I refer you to neocities.org

Basically modern-day Geocities which are exactly that "just want a website to call my own" niche of autists mostly with sites owned by people who hardly know how to code.

heavensgate.com
This is the website of a cult that committed mass suicide in '97. Apparently there are two people who still maintain the site and answer questions about the cult.

Not sure if it counts as old-school but it definitely counts as interesting.
lingscars.com/

>That's literally hobbyist websites. Again, I refer you to neocities.org
There are loads of academic, scientific and informative websites that are also like this which you will not find on neocities. Neocities is a great place though.

Bonus points for the message in the source code.

She changed her website about a year ago. Its not nearly as shit as it used to be. Its a lot more organized now but it doesn't have that same craziness anymore.

God I miss the Geocities/Angelfire/Tripod/TheGlobe days. There will never be a time on the internet ever again where people threw up a page simply to share knowledge, not to try to make .000000001 cents per-click with ad traffic.

I remember sending all friends this shit, and then implying it is was a virus, and I also recieved.

all we have to do is drive the amount of money you can make off advertisements to zero, and all the cancer will go out of business.

Something like this?

>. There will never be a time on the internet ever again where people threw up a page simply to share knowledge,
it's like you've never heard of youtube.
i don't know shit about cars but because of youtube searches ive:
replaced belts/oil/oil filter/air filter/ cabin air filter/brakes from my 1999 cavalier, 1998 blazer, 2012 mazda2
>i've taken out and replaced the headliner in a 2005 silverado

i learned all this from country folk who just wanted to help other people repairing their vehicles.
i plan on taking apart a lawnmower this weekend.
hell i don't even know what i'm looking for. all i know is that the mower starts and then slowly dies.
again.
i don't know shit about engines but i'm praying youtube will help me.
the youtube celebs probably will be of no use. the country redneck who is posting with a 480p video will probably be the most helpful.

lol wtf is up with the chinese despacito video with a gun pointing at her the whole time

Do you think adnauseum will help with that or is it a secret way for advertisers to make more money?

Not him but I like written word + pictures better than videos. I can more easily go at my own pace, skipping the stuff I already know while spending more time on what I don't.

i do both.
forums for text and pics.
youtube
for a more detailed view.

it always annoys me when people think fondly of the pre-google days.
yeah there were sites that were their just to spread knowledge but the knowledge was scarce since you had to be tech savy to even create a webpage.

now any computer illiterate person can spread knowledge through youtube or social media.
computer illiterate rednecks might not know how to maintain a website but they sure do know how to post a 5 minute video on how to disassemble a BRIGGS & STRATTON LAWNMOWER.

>>Do you think adnauseum will help with that or is it a secret way for advertisers to make more money?
In theory it can work. In practice, I'm not sure if some addon dev can manage to stay ahead of the ability of Google et al to filter out the pollution he's trying to put in their ad data. I'd be more confident in it if it were a bigger project.

there was less stuff total but the signal-to-noise ratio was a lot better. Search engines were worse but useful sites linked to other useful sites a lot more.

toastytech.com/index.html

>the signal-to-noise ratio was a lot better
i've honestly never felt like the internet has gotten worse.
the internet has everything.
stop complaining about the shit.
go find the good stuff.
its not like the good shit fell onto your lap before google.
you still had to go find it.
forums are the best since other people have asked the same question you are currently asking.

web.archive.org/web/20070701195719/http://home.tu-clausthal.de:80/~utaba/A600/A600-e.html

>but the knowledge was scarce since you had to be tech savy to even create a webpage.

No, you didn't. Thanks to The Globe, Geocities, Angelfire, and Tripod you really didn't need to know squat about HTML coding to throw up an information page. Between those 4 sites there was a tremendous amount of knowledge that was a simple Yahoo or Altavista search away.

I started learning how to write an arcade emulator thanks to those sites, I learned how to repair my old Sequential Circuits synths there, I learned to optimize my machine to play Quake and Quakeworld there, I first read the lore of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (which I grew up with as "Battle of the Planets") on those sites, and soooo much more. I got my first bit of help with Linux from those sites when I first installed Red Hat 5.2 on my 486/66. Those sites were invaluable and there were so many of them it was kinda hard to find a topic I couldn't research out there.

yes you are correct.
sure you could learn about other nerdy things but i highly doubt you could find pages dedicated to lawnmower repair.
rednecks didn't have internet back then.
too rural, too poor.

old internet was great to learn about geeky shit but that was about it.

Blogs were the start of the death of the original web. Streamlined websites built on templates where self important normies pontificate about useless shit

I remember back in 2000/2001 or so, when CNN began "getting reaction from the blogosphere". Thats when I knew something was off about the web.

Thanks for clearing things up.

Pic: before javascript and bait fit-to-mobile were a thing
yes, the websites were a lot better. a 44kb HTML file had everything you could imagine. Today lots of websites are actually displaying images as if they were scripts and DRM has become default instead of simple right-click save files
