Here's the speccy.
This actually works fine. Even with the shitty core duo. Even with only 2GB of DDR2 RAM (the system idles at a little bit under 1GB). Even with an ancient HDD. The only thing lagging is the IGP, but disabling animations in Windows and the browser (both palemoon and firefox ESR work fine) fixes it.
To be fair Lubuntu works great too, but the software compatibility made me stick with WIndows.
It's a memepad T60 btw

lubongo idles at ~600MB so it's not much of a difference. I'm planning to change thermal paste because I'm pretty sure it's never been replaced.

Use a standalone wm since you only have 2g ram, i3 or openbox are good. Can you even open a modern web browser without heavily hitting swap?

retro threads are a place to talk about old shit that really doesn't have a place in any regular thread on the board, all this guy posted was some shitty daily driver T60 that wouldn't look out of place in any hourly /tpg/, screenfetch or speccy thread, it's running Win10 for fucks sake
usually I'm the first one to shit on retards who whine about people who post XP era hardware but this guy deserves a little shit for it, plus he's given a bunch of other trendy redditors the idea that this is a thinkpad/"vintage" mechanical keyboard blog thread and not a retro thread

Sold this PS/2 to make room for a 701c I ordered
Angel Sullivan
OP reporting, I'm installing Windows 7 x32 to see if it runs any better. Also I removed 1GB of RAM to use on another old laptop (a Toshiba with a Pentium Dual T3400) so it has 3GB + readyboost + an old 7200RPM HDD, becoming quite useful for little things like videos, torrents and minecraft servers to play with my gf's daughter (no I'm not a c**k, the kid was like 4 months when I met her. In fact I stole her from the baby's dad and that's alpha as fuck).
Brody Barnes
I’m gonna miss it but it’s going to someone who can finish restoring it, I never got around to fixing up the floppy drive and making boot disks for it
And I’m getting the 701c, which I’ve wanted for a long time

It’s similar to the keyboard on T4x thinkpads, I think they’re from the same manufacture switch wise
Unrelated, this really isn’t authentic retro or really that old. It’s my pentium 4 machine, 2.2ghz north wood 478 p4, 2gb of ddr and a GeForce 6200
It exists for the sole purpose of halo 1
Liam Wright
Yes, red switch
This is as far as I got with it, boot disks wouldn’t read. New owner is working on rebuilding the drive.
Isaac Collins
mine's also got a fucked drive, can't really be arsed to take it apart since I have other stuff to work on
always wanted to kit one out though, they're pretty much the apex of the original PC architecture under IBM
Ryan Ward
Shit son, a friend bought this when Doom 3 was out. It ran it decently on Medium or something. That shit was boss.
Jace Myers
also I'm getting lubuntu LTS 16.04.2 x32 and xubuntu LTS 16.04.4 x32 in case windows 7 gets silly with drivers and shit. I'm too old and too cool to deal with that stuff in the year of our lord.
Xavier Clark
well looks like I was full of shit before, I tried Lubuntu with a liveUSB and it idles at about 300mb of RAM. Now I'll do the same but with Xubuntu, and if it's under 500mb I'm keeping it. Lubuntu has given me shit in the past, unlike Xubuntu.
Juan Taylor
Id go with Xubuntu but replace Xwdm with Openbox

install linux you stupid faggot
Carson Powell
I've been using i3 for about a week and i'ts really not that bad, only takes a couple days to get used to it. The point is though, any standalone wm will do just fine since they are the lightest on resources.
Elijah James
try lubuntu first, will run a bit smoother than xubuntu. i also like it better in general
Luis Myers

I'm from >>>/Chile/. And no I've never been at the US and I'm not planning to go there, so you can relax my friend.
alright, I'll do that.
I'm skipping the idea of Windows 7 at this point because I know it will give me driver issues, I'm just waiting for a slow format to be finished in the T60's HDD and then I'll install Xubuntu. I already tried it as a liveUSB and surprisingly it idles at only 194 mb.
Cooper Lewis
Servers shut down a few years ago, there are still a few directly connectable ones hosted by some users on the halo forums though

to see if the drive is OK... and it isn't. It got stuck at 80% for quite a while before continuing.
I'm running Xubuntu (liveUSB) and running the command smartctl -t long which is supposed to fix broken sectors(?). It will take about 2 hours and it's 5AM so I'll leave it running.
If you guys have a suggestion about a linux command to make a HDD surface scan and "fix" broken sectors I'll be happy to hear it.
Cheers

Yeah it's one autist who has been posting in threads for the last 8 years about his silly PS/2 with the broken floppy drive. I swear, I remember this guy posting in like 2012 or something.
Jaxson Thomas
>mine's also got a fucked drive, can't really be arsed to take it apart since I have other stuff to work on
If you were curious, this is a recurrent problem on PS/2s because the combo power/data cable gets hot and ends up damaging the PCB on the floppy drive. Osborne 1s had a floppy drive like this too and they had similar issues. Poor design that was devised so they could save on cables.
David Sanchez
He could just get a standard floppy or a Gotek and make an adapter to split the power lines off of the data cable.
Angel Garcia
OP reporting.
Well Xubuntu won't boot. looks like the HDD is doing worse than I expected. Xubuntu installed fine but when it tries to boot it just sits there in the middle of the process. I'm gonna run a deep surface scan with hiren's boot and see if that finally makes the drive usable, then try with xubuntu again.
Ayden Kelly
If it's an 8086 Model 30, it has 720k drives so you have to tape the hole up on a 1.44MB disk and format it at 720k.
Camden Lee
I'm sure he knows that. The problem with the drive is almost certainly

Morrow Micro Decision. One of the many "turnkey" computers sold in the early 80s with a basic Z80 architecture and CP/M for noobs who just wanted to do word processing. Soon swept away by PC compatibles.
