This. I bought a GTX 970 to replace my 7970 which had memory bugs, then an RX 480 because the drivers for the 970 wouldn't let me sleep my Linux machine.
I've been through the Fury, Polaris and Vega and still haven't found something worth buying. If it weren't for things breaking or not working properly I'd still be waiting on my 7970.

Funny, I had memory bugs with my 7970 as well, but they only really showed up in Skyrim, for some reason.
Even weirder is, if I overclocked or downclocked it, even slightly, I'd get corruption all over the screen in Windows.

I understand that Ryzen architecture takes all available resources, but this is JUST
they probably got some inventory built up due to the decresed mining demand and will offset it to a new OEM line.
That doesn't mean that they won't release a new series for end consumers. But it does raise a bit of concern that they might not, though. From Nvidia side, some rumors also give merit to the argument that the 10x0 series will have their eol somewhat extended.
tl;dr don't draw your conclusions from all of this, but it is looking bad for those paying attention.
RTG has been underfunded, it's been difficult for AMD to get and hold on to GPU development staff, and their GPUs have been performing badly in the market since the 7970Ghz stopped being competitive.

you got a few factors at play here
1) nvidia has yet to release something to force a better card in the mid range
2) you have vega being what it was, with consumers having no fucking clue what is missing, what went wrong, and why none of the bottleneck mitigation seems to work
3) you have navi which will likely be based off vega coming down the pipe
honestly, for gpus, this is not amds time to shine but time to get by.

one more generation ahead there. the 200 series was fantastic, the problem is they got bought up by miners about 1 week after launch and took 6 months to regain stock, which at that point nvidia put out the 900 series,
it wasn't till the 980ti however that nvidia had a clear lead over amd as anything under that was.

nvidia will rebrand and jump the price on said rebrand up for no reason other then they can.
and because no one buys amd cards, they don't heavily invest, as they never get rewarded for their effort.

A Vega refresh is coming not too far into the future, I'm guessing 2-3 months max. I'm sure of this because VEGA12 support was added to both MESA and the Linux kernel v4.17 a few weeks ago. And it looks like replacements for the entire RX 5XX given the number of PCI-IDs.
NVidia has faster and better GPUs ready, that's for sure. Look at AMD and Intel, for years and years Intel released nothing but 1% "improvements". Then Ryzen comes out and suddenly Intel's able to add more cores to their entire line-up, just like that. It's kind of sad because AMD is kind of screwed. If they were to release something that beats the 1080ti two months from now then NVidia would just take something they have ready off the shelf and beat it.

What's wrong with the RX 480? I use mine for 1440p >60 Hz gaming (FreeSync ftw) and it works fine. Ultra settings are a meme.

When the HD 7xxx series launched I got the Radeon HD 7870 XT which unlike the name suggests had a Tahiti chip instead of Pitcairn and performed between the 7950 and the 7970 when overclocked for only €200. After the card aged like Fine Wine™ Polaris was announced.
I got the RX 480 for €200 when the first once with aftermarket cooling arrived and now I enjoy the open source amdgpu drivers while having a decent card for a good price again. This card will last me through the whole shortage period no problem.
