Even 10GB of ram for >10 tabs aside, why the fuck was FF churning that much proc? Are there any alternatives that actually address these kind of demands on the system? Or even are there settings or addons I can use to help mitigate such things?

Everything had been open for at least 10 minutes, with the occasional Jow Forums refresh while the other tabs just sat there.

Here's a hint OP from someone working off a 4GB craptop. The top two FF processes in memory usage manage active tabs. Cancelling them will cause most of your tabs that are running a script of some kind to crash, but you can reload those tabs by simply clicking on them. For tabs you don't need active immediately, this saves a boatload of memory.

the new FF loves memory, no matter what you do. your only chance is using old versions or ESR for now.

It's not a great solution, but it makes keeping multiple tabs up without freezing due to low memory possible.
