Blue squares contained personal info I removed in photoshop. Not sure I understand the rest of your comparison however.

Blue squares as in the whole metro "design" itself. It takes after all the worst aspects of modern flat design. Lots of people criticize minimal/flat design for laziness, when it actually takes a lot of skill to design something to be scaled back as much as possible while still being as readable as possible.

Meanwhile MS drew blue squares in MS paint and said "hey, UI"

The rest is mostly in reference to the different style icons. Some of them are early '00s-style skeumorphic design, some of them more the early '10s-style glossiness, some of them are just black like that kid in the back in the short bus who thinks they're a 1337 hacker because they applied a third party theme to their windows machine.

meanwhile xfce, kde, cinnamon, etc comes with imitations of pre-8 start menu, i'd rather them imitate 10's menu because it's possible to make it minimal and aesthetically pleasing
