Replace desktop and laptop with iPad

Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
If you couldn't replace it completely because of some kind of software missing on the iPad or some other reason, could you see yourself using it just for general casual browsing and media consumption instead of your usual PC?
If not, why?

I've tried an I couldn't even replace my desktop with a laptop. A tablet replacement would be absolutely fucking hopeless.

I have a couple of use cases which can't be properly done on an iPad yet (mostly video post-production and vector graphics) but most of my day to day usage, including painting, could be done pretty well on it. Most heavy lifting is done by my server in the first place and I could just connect a keyboard and ssh into it.

>Like a computer. Unlike any computer.
What's a computer?

No. The two in ones and especially the lenovo yogabook is the closest tablets get to actually be usable as a daily mememachine.
The cursor input and the free floating windows are very important for productivity.

I tried to replace a laptop with an iPad, but it's just not as convenient/didn't feel right.

Absolutely not

This, plus screens aren’t big enough and lack of horsepower. But for normalfags writing in word and browsing social media it must be perfect

Definitively, i'm doing the 2nd, only keep my pc for calibre, music converting and torrenting.

No, I could not. I use my desktop for video games. My laptop for productivity, my surface for professional drawing and my ipad for sketching. I primarily use my phone to browse the internet and watch videos. I can't play windows games that require a dedicated gpu like an nvidia gtx 980 ti on my ipad.

>Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
Of course not.

Even ignoring the hardware limitations, none of the apps I need for work are available on the thing. Even the web apps would have trouble due to the way webbrowsers work on ios.

>could you see yourself using it just for general casual browsing and media consumption instead of your usual PC?
Home/hobby needs are not satisfied either. Even for basic media consumption, iPad is fucked up. Problems with the webbrowsers(limited Javascript, addons, usable memory) make me rage when I have to use an iPad. Even Jow Forums, which is basic as fuck, has problems with iPad because you can't see Webm files without downloading them and using VLC app to play them. It's a pain in the ass.

Real shame. I' think it's quite acceptable device based on the software and hardware specs alone, but the execution is atrocious.

does it come with Ryzen 1700 equivalent CPU and 32GB of RAM?

> Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
Listen, even laptops haven't solved the cooling issue yet, so a fucking memethin slab with no fans is not gonna replace anything for years. I still have a desktop and two laptops in increments on the performance vs portability sliding scale, so maybe I'll shrink to a single laptop and desktop at some point but a tablet form factor is at least a decade or two off from coming close to that.
Also memethin keyboards suck balls, but if a tablet really was as powerful as a desktop at the same price point then a docking solution at home would work well enough, so that's not an issue.

> If you couldn't replace it completely because of some kind of software missing on the iPad or some other reason, could you see yourself using it just for general casual browsing and media consumption instead of your usual PC?
I use my large phone/small phablet for that (S7 Edge). I've no desire for a bulkier device.

The cooling issue is only an issue because of the software we run on it. You could use a far cooler processor if the software was written with that in mind.

It might not be a replacement but it is a brilliant addition
I bought the pro model and its a joy using this magnificent piece of hardware

>Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
No, of course not. A tablet is worse in every way except for portability. Screen is small (and there's only 1), input method is bad, its hardware is much less capable in general. It has no advantage, not to mention that nothing I use for work would run on it, nor does everything I use for fun run on it either.
>If you couldn't replace it completely because of some kind of software missing on the iPad or some other reason, could you see yourself using it just for general casual browsing and media consumption instead of your usual PC?
Generally, no again. Some media works fine on tablets (reading, manga/comics) but in the screen is too small to enjoy video and it's certainly not fast enough for the kinds of games which a PC is capable of running.
>If not, why?
See above, portability is the only thing it has going. If you have access to a proper PC, you have a better way of doing everything an iPad does.

I bough an used iPad mini 2, and it’s actually pretty comfy to use. I don’t see it replacing anything my PC does though, it’s way too limited in actual functionality.

You what

Now can software make a processor run cooler while still utilizing its full performance?

You having a cooler processor you fucking dip. If the software needs less power you can have a less powerful processor that doesn't run as hot.

You do know that computers didn't always have fans, right?

>free floating windows are very important for productivity
How so?

I feel these are too small. I prefer reading documents with the pages side by side, like a book. This takes up a good amount of space. I would like more space on the screen for general browsing as well.
Don't like the keyboards I've seen so far for typing either.

Most of what I do is best suited for a large convertible. It's only once in a while that I do something intensive, besides playing a game.

>"stop using the software you need/want to use"
>"we could all use a shitty tablet then"

tablets are great for content consumption, as soon as you need to be productive you need a proper pc

Or we could write software better. Which we should be doing anyway.

iPad is good, but on kitchen in bag. For coocking recipes.

Absolutely not. Don't care how good you manage to make a virtual keyboard, it's still useless compared to a real keyboard. Also, the screen is too small. I'd have to connect a bunch of things to it to replace a desktop and at that point I'd rather have a desktop.

I do have a 10" tablet and the only thing I use it for ever is media consumption. I'd rather use my desktop or laptop for everything else.

Even tasks as simple as copying/pasting text from one program to another become a chore when using a tablet interface.

Fucking touchscreen is god awful for any productivity.

No.

Actually doing shit with a tablet is cancerous aids.

I use a 10,5“ Pro as my only computer after my PC shit the bed. Using „affinity photo“ for editing photos and Luma Fusion for video editing. I really don’t write that much so I’m not even using a keyboard, just the stylus. Don’t really feel the need of a full size PC or laptop in the future anymore.

It's impossible to do any programming or development on an ipad. It was clearly made with media-consuming normies in mind. And maybe artists.

> If the software needs less power you can have a less powerful processor that doesn't run as hot.
Yeah and if you have a more powerful processor the software will run faster.

My post basically said "tablet processors are nowhere near powerful enough due to power and cooling" and your argument in favour of tablets is basically "just use a less powerful processor, dude"? Really user?

No, because iOS is fucking trash. It's made for phones and doesn't scale well, and has no real software. Safari doesn't have any extensions on the desktop and none at all on mobile. The new file explorer is a joke.

Nothing could ever get me to use an iPad.

>Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
>9.7" screen
Are you kidding? You're kidding, right?

Attached: blog-2.jpg (380x500, 54K)

Can't open enough tabs, can't sandbox my tabs from each other, can't organize my tabs by opening new windows or through extensions or anything. It's fine for browsing the internet but it's horrible for anything in depth.

Why are the bezels still so huge on an ipad?
Looks like garbage

what's a computer?

I found that using a trackpad is much better ergonomically than waving your hand all over a big touch screen

it is not possible to "consume" media, it does not go away once you e.g watch it
food is consumed, even input to protocols can be consumed in the sense that it is "lost" once you read it, but a movie is just there forever

Just let me know when I can save files into ipads internal memory and I'll buy it.
Nevermind. I just want the ability to wipe out that shitty OS.

iPad is for reading news in the morning

I could probably replace my laptop with a Thinkpad x---t

It depends on what your use cases are. If you are browsing the web, watching YT videos, playing some light games then a tablet could replace a laptop/desktop. If you are programming, video editing, modeling, number crunching then no, a tablet isn’t really a good replacement.

bump

I tried but it was awful. I sold my tablet and bought a Thinkpad.

can you even do this on an ipad?

Attached: 2018-04-14_20-59-07.jpg (3818x2078, 1.28M)

No. iPad is great on kitchen in ziploc.

This is one of the most retarded inbred memes of all time. No shit that a pen is desirable for artists and not for navigating a UI. It's almost like they're completely different, you retard.

A convertible yeah but not a tablet. I need the keyboard. And if I'm moving the computer around a lot I need the keyboard attached so it I don't have to fiddle with it.

Yes, iPad is good for watch porn and shitposting.

-send from my iPad.

Fuck off iToddler

The iPad Pro lets you use a Smart Keyboard that doubles as a cover, so it's almost like a laptop.

Attached: ipad Smart Keyboard.jpg (1000x1000, 102K)

Only shitty.

>powerful enough for any task
surely this is false advertising?

no mouse support and no real way to use the file system.

for consuming media yes, as a PC replacement no.

I may as well shitcan my computers and use my phone for everything.

It's where ipad apps are made. They earn tons of money off a computer. You ipad fag wondering what's a computer are going to face a big chunk of loan over your shoulder.

Yeah this
A phone is much better than a tablet
I don't even know why tablets exist anymore

You could probably replace a laptop with it, but not a desktop. Full computers are just better for certain tasks and not having one would be too limiting. You can even use remote access to use your desktop (or even a remote VM) and have most of the functionality you need. I’m planning to try this when I go back to college.

I tried a few days to replace my Surface Pro with an iPad, holy shit was that a bad idea. Thank fuck for Apple having a decent return policy.

I replaced my shitty PC desktop setup with an iPad pro. The thing is simply flawless for my purposes: writing, artistic scetching, and media consumption. The user interface is alot smoother than the move mouse + click combo, you just touch gently and the thing co-operates. For some people, of course, it doesn't fit the requirements, but many people could switch to an iPad if they learned to fully utilize iOS.

If it run linux then probably.

That's all the iPad was good for when using it for art, it's only good for sketching. Finishing work takes 5x longer since the apps on it sucks shit and moving files between apps is a retarded process without dedicated file system.

>iFag
no thanks. a 4:3 thinkpad for me

Attached: shimarin_thinkpad.png (1920x1080, 821K)

Of course it depends on what you need to get done, obviously an iPad can't literally do any tasks like they claim, just for example because some work might require a large or multiple screens.
For me it would have to be able to do latex, run a fully functional terminal and vim as well as a web browser. I've never used any Apple device but I don't think they have a bash terminal on iPads for example?

No mouse support so it’s useless for most productivity

It's Chromebooks all over again.
It can only replace a "normal" laptop if all you do is browse the web and write/edit documents. Maybe you could use it for drawing and reading as well. But you're not going to be recording albums or editing video on an iPad.
e.g. Chromebooks.
The only real difference between a Chromebook and an iPad is form factor. iPad is better for reading books and whatnot, Chromebook follows the traditional laptop formfactor.

>reading a book on a phone or a laptop
>breaking out the laptop and waiting for it to boot up to do small tasks like shitposting

I never understood the Smart Keyboard Cover.
The iPad is already big enough to display a keyboard big enough to type on on the display itself. Why use a clunky keyboard cover to accomplish what is basically the same task?

The whole point of the iPad was to ditch the keyboard.

What's a computer?

>Do you think you could replace your desktop and or laptop with an iPad or some other kind of tablet?
no, it lacks a basic component called a fucking mouse
>If you couldn't replace it completely because of some kind of software missing on the iPad or some other reason, could you see yourself using it just for general casual browsing and media consumption instead of your usual PC?
>If not, why?
because it's a malformed child between a smartphone and a desktop, with none of the usability or convenience

Yes, whenever i use my laptop I've always been thinking "This would be so much better if it didn't have a keyboard and I was looking at the screen through a layer of fingerprints"

CAN I USE THAT BITCH ASS THING TO ANNOTATE EPUBS FFS
