Hey Jow Forumsuys, I'm returning to University after a year's break and my current rig is a 2012 office desktop. Pitiful, I know.

I'm currently trying to hunt for the most-bang-for-the-least-buck laptop that will be just right for college, and I'm currently eyeing the Acer Aspire E 15, but I am not only open to but begging for suggestions. My budget is approximately a thousand dollars but I'd like to keep it to eight hundred and lower if at all possible.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help a troglodyte out.

Wow what a unique and interesting question to start a new thread for.

Have you considered fucking off back to /b/?

>Pitiful, I know.

fuck off kid, buy a video card for it like a 1050 ti and lug that bitch off to uni.

spending a thousand dollars on a laptop for uni is fucking stupid and you'll know this ten years from now.

this is ten year from now you telling you this, through me, now.

you're welcome, kiddo.

also if you must laptop, go amd APU like i did 5 years ago and keep your expectations realistic. 300 bucks can get you a decent gayman experience if you can live with 1366x768 on a mid range laptop you buy on sale.

I won't have enough living space in the shitty forms for a desktop, and the i3 is slowly dying

Shit nigga, I'm here because I'm praying for a decent answer instead of what they'd give me.

>i3 is slowly dying

nigger cpu's either work or they don't.

if that mobo fits an i3 it'll fit an i5 or i7. buy it and replace it.

and put a fucking video card in it.

you're a lazy ignorant fuck, OP. spend your grand on a gayman laptop if you want.

i have like 5 laptops. know when's the last time i used one? neither do i.

I had that same laptop and one day it turned off on it's own and never turned on back again. Got it repaired. 5 months later after warranty expired the same shit happens. Getting it repaired costs $250.

Okay, sure. I'm sure the change in quality precipitating directly after a power surge is completely unrelated. And yeah, sorry for not being Jow Forums, prick. But I need something for college and I currently have nothing.

Shit. Advice taken.

Whitt do you need to do on it, nigger? You can get a decent laptop for $300 for writing papers and stuff. If you gotta do 3d rendering and shit you might need to use that extra room in your budget.

define 'change in quality'. it's a fucking cpu, it either works or does not. electronics basics 101. it works or it does not. it's either on or off.

i've never seen a cpu sold on ebay saying that it kinda works but not as good as new, a little slower than stock, hangs up a bit but still runs.

you're full of shit.

I've had it for two years. It's okay for gaming but it's fucking huge and heavy, not ideal for school imo

800usd desktop+ 200usd thinkpad.

Thank me later.

you're a young, entitled, lazy faggot.

blow a grand on a laptop, it still won't do what you want a desktop to do.

you have to learn the hard way so enjoy wasting your money.

instead of being like every other faggot at uni, get a dirt cheap laptop that just works for laptop shit, and keep your pc for gayman shit at the house.

gets it

Then maybe it was just a huge fucking coinky-dink man. I'm not an expert on this, which is fucking obvious. Chill. It's probably junkware and memory-related then.

Also, I'm going to be gone for potentially four whole years in a dorm with four other people and no room for a desktop. A desktop is literally not a viable option in this scenario.

Potentially both. The groundline is that a desktop is not a viable option, and my job has granted me at least a grand to blow, and I want to blow it wisely. If that means only spending three hundred, I'm fine with that. If I had to spend more, I'm fine with that too.

>no room for a desktop
Holy shit user, do you live on china or something?
If you're insisting on a gaymen laptop then there is plentiful of 80ousd-ish laptops with the GTX 1050 and if you get to the thousands maybe a 3GB 1060.

Attached: 325914.jpg.png (225x350, 145K)

Tell work you need a desktop and a laptop, ideally. Laptop can never approach the performance of desktop, but if you can only get 1, I'd get something like this

amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071ZL3996/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1523762581&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=15 inch asus laptop&dpPl=1&dpID=512sYinkCrL&ref=plSrch

Unironically, yes, my university's program will involve a stint in China, and the living conditions may actually be an improvement there.
Thanks, my guy.

>my job has granted me at least a grand to blow, and I want to blow it wisely

Okay, if I'm gonna help you, I need some specifics about your needs.
We know price limit is $1K.

What about size, 14" 15" 17"?
Is weight a serious concern?
What kind of work do you intend to do with it?

ebay.com/itm/Acer-15-6-Intel-Core-i3-2-40-GHz-4-GB-Ram-1-TB-HDD-Windows-10-Home-E5-575-33BM/263281839660?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

>Implying $1000 gives you room for choice

It gives plenty of room.
There's a lot of top tier shit in the off lease and refurb market for that price.

Neither size nor weight is a legitimate concern.

It will mainly be essay work but there may be some 3D imaging involved for certain presentations. I will probably want to do some gaming on it during the summer, and I'd like something that have some longevity in that department. My 2012 office computer that I currently use could barely run a game made in 2012.

And while it isn't hardware related, a manufacturer with a good support and warranty rep would be great.

I'm sincerely sorry if I'm not being helpful enough here. Like angry-user earlier suggested, I really am lazy when it comes to Jow Forums shit. All of my friends were techies growing up and most of them are IT and CS graduates or self taught at the very least, and they did all of the work for me, and now I'm a fucking lost child when it comes to computers. I can read a spec sheet and understand it and troubleshoot basic OS related problems but that's about it.

I'd look at Dell Financial Services. Subscribe to their emails and look out for discounts on a business-like machine. Put an SSD in it and go. Should be fine for non-gaming tasks.

OP wants a gayman laptop under a grand and will not do his homework.

20 bucks says he'll drop out OR not give a fuck about his laptop in two years.

OP if you're still reading, you're living in debt land and not reality. you're likely taking out student loans thinking you'll make big bucks and pay it back.

kids are so fucking far out of touch with reality, highschool really fucks them over.

go to community college and learn a trade and make real money without debt you fucking hippy.

What the fuck are you talking about.
I'm not OP.

I'm genuinely not though. Academic scholarships have paid my way through. And I have done minimal homework simply because I never planned to start the replacement hunt until April. It is now April. I am just now beginning my homework, and I thought I'd come to a moderately experienced community first for quick recommendations that I can put some stock in.

do not buy acer for any reason whatsoever
their build quality is atrocious
everyone I know with an acer machine, including myself, ends up dealing with busted hinges and shit despite not roughly handling them, ordinary transport in a bag, etc

I've had two Acer machines.
one machine has missing hinges and seems to have wifi troubles
one machine developed a stuck clickpad (said machine is currently as useful as a rock, scavenged the disk and ram and put it in the older machine)
bit of a shame, because you do get decent specs for the cost

It's widespread as well. Check amzon reviews

Those should be a start.

Yes, Acer is made out of glue and toilet paper.
I will, however, say that they tend to run for quite a long time, even as they fall apart.

Yo. Just another guy trying to sell you on a used thinkpad. A month ago I needed to pick up a good laptop to go on the road with me since I drive truck and go to school online. Something that could take some abuse. These things are fucking solid.

Took me a few days of ebay watching but eventually I snagged this:

>Laptop 14" Lenovo ThinkPad T440p Intel i5 4210M 2.6GHz 8GB RAM 500GB HDD Win7

For $150 bucks. Looks like it just sat in a company laptop cabinet somewhere.

trackpad on the model sucked so I replaced it, bought a backlit keyboard, and threw in a 240gb M.2 SSD all for under $100. If I really need the extra power from an i7 4800MQ I could probably pick one up for another $70-100

Haven't tried anything too serious as far as games go, since while when I'm on the road I rarely have time for it. But it manages all the RTS games I love.

You seem to be in a different situation, but if you want to save some hard earned cash and end up with a nice machine, you won't be disappointed. Check out the thinkpad general thread.

never had a bad acer laptop, but they're certainly not thinkpad or probook level quality.

my hp probook is easily the most badass laptop i've got. they run like 150-200 on ebay all day. think i won this one for 120.
