whatevery you can do in a tablet you can just do in your smartphone without having to carry two gadgets around and if you want something more powerful then an ultrabook would be MUCH more useful

They’re pretty decent for reading comics, manga and scientific papers on the go. Phones are too small for that and laptops aren’t as comfy with that keyboard dangling around.
Also could be decent for portable games.
But yeah, they’re useless for productivity in most cases.
The best use for tablets is when they’re simply an embedded platform for touch interfaces in stores, restaurants, parks, etc. Not for the end user, though.
Tablets are the perfect size for portable digital media consumption. Phones aren't. Neither are laptops. And tablets are cheap enough that you can own them as a 3rd device.

Jesus no, an iPad or any device with a backlit screen is HORRIBLE for reading, an electronic ink e-reader is about a zillion times better. In a pinch, an iPad will do, but Jesus fuck reading off that thing for any length of time.
What iPads have going for them is flexibility, you can watch a video, then Facebook, then maybe visit a web page, write an email, read something, and they do all these things far better than a phone thanks to the larger screen.

Been using one for the past few months to fill visit/support time while best friend has been in hospital after bad accident. He's too weary to converse so I can read to myself or aloud to him, or play audio books.
I keep up with professional/scientific journals and online books, send the occasional e-mail (case has Bluetooth keyboard), and jot notes/ideas or record video/audio interactions as they occur. The latter is very useful for keeping track of his treatments, which are complicated and diverse.
Cameras are good; I've been documenting his care day by day. Used it to help his care team understand his home layout so they can set goals for his PT/OT.
His care team isn't put off by this at all; they're happy we get so much detail recorded and can ask good questions as a result. Several times nurses on a later shift have asked to hear audio of what the earlier shift, or doctor, or charge nurse said about an issue, for clarification on points of confusion.
Navigating visually is easier on a 10" screen than a phone. Easier also to share images in care team meeting setting. Everybody can see, point, discuss rather than handing phone around.
Since the whole rig was about $450, if it gets boosted by some thieving-ass hospital employee it's not a big loss as a laptop would be, in hardware, software, or data.
This friend was intrigued...so bought him one. He says it has saved his sanity letting him read and watch vids (not Hollywood, small media stuff). Also w/ headphones on he can shut out the noises of hospital setting, including other patients in distress.
Forgot to mention: downloading all his care images, records, etc., to stick for archiving.
I've been using my N7 snce 2012 and finally replaced it after all these years for a Tab3 8 Plus. I just read manga or check emails etc.
I've got a Asus who-the-fuck-cares tablet I bought for $100. Its great as a 3rd/4th device behind desktop, laptop, and phone. Its always handy on the coffee table, good for Googling things or watching YT. I use it to control my TV & Xbone too. Obviously it is not a necessary piece of tech but whatever, ymmv.
