What laptop do you recommend for college guys? I’m looking for something between 500-1000 dollars. Something fast. Nothing really gaming oriented.

Calm your tits dude. Asking for advice on a laptop is hardly tech support.
Anyways OP, it usually doesnt even matter. As long as it has an internet connection you're pretty much set.

Here's a refurb 15" Latitude E6540, older but rock solid machine.

Refurb 15" Precision M4800, same age as above, but loaded with heavy duty features that only mobile workstations have.

Latitude E7470, newer, faster, lighter, but only integrated graphics.

Lenovo:
4th gen X1 Carbon, the lightest fastest 14" laptop you will get your hands on

T570, ultrabook, but bulkier than the X1.

Those should be a start.
get yourself a pi-top OP
OP listen to this guy. Business class laptops are great because they're built to last. I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude and it's served me well.
Only retards buy non business grade laptops.
Shop for off lease models of the following:
Dell Latitudes and Precisions.
HPProbooks, Elitebooks, and ZBooks.
Lenovo T series and P series.
Panasonic Toughbooks.
Toshiba Tecras.
Fujitsu Lifebooks.
Unironically this.
ThinkPad 13 is bretty gud so far.
nice choice. I second this.
if youre just writing/browsing than 200$ chromebook. If you need actual programs xps 13
Stay the fuck away from HP. Their products will fail the day after the 18 month warranty. Hell, they'll probably fail before that. Fuck HP. Do NOT waste your money on HP products or support them in any way.
Surface book (1 or 2) if you intend to take notes at all.
I second this. My Dell Latitude E6420 has been with me since 2011 with very few issues (although I'm still upgrading to something beefier this year).
>tfw bought an HP Spectre X360 because it was cheaper than the Dell XPS 13 and thought HP and Dell would be on par
big mistake
trackpad is a piece of shit, even worse than asus
overheats and fan runs like crazy when using it while charging
coil whine when in sleep and charging
I bought the Dell XPS 13 and it's coming tomorrow, but no one local wants to buy my HP Spectre X360 except at $300 below what I'm asking.
Fuck, don't buy an HP laptop. Not even the premium ones.
nothing from microsoft , with windows on it
>xps 13
get a thinkpad, a lenovo, or a dell latitude
put mint, debian or xubuntu on it.
you are hamstringing yourself in going to college with a "windows machine"
Stop buying consumer grade, you mongs
>thinkpad
>lenovo
you can't be serious here.
xps 13 is better than that.
owo
if i buy business grade it's 2kg+
if i buy consumer grade it's 1.2kg
of course i'm going to buy consumer grade, i don't want a heavy ass backpack.
>install fedora
Kill yourself nigga
this. it makes me extremely sad too because i want to like hp for their spectre line but their products, any of them, always have problems
this is also a pretty good suggestion too. if your just gonna write and browse, save yourself some money and just get a chromebook. just keep in mind you will be dependent on internet though.
if it were up to me, macbooks are ok if you want status, dell and lenovo (used) are the only companies you should look at.
It depends what you're studying.
For artsy shit, I'd probably try for a Mac. Same for technical shit, if I could afford it, otherwise something I could install GNU/Linux on. Business school - just whatever everyone else is using, probably some Windows crap. English and shit-tier, just get whatever you need to learn how to file for unemployment online, prolly chromebook.
>buying an HP Spectre X360 over the Dell XPS 13 or other premium Windows ultrabooks
I seriously hope you guys don't do this.
Spend the extra couple hundred bucks for a Dell XPS, Microsoft Surface, or an Apple MacBook. Hell, you could even save a couple hundred bucks for a Lenovo, Asus, Samsung, or LG and it will be better.
I made the mistake of buying one and I regret it after 2 months.
>synaptics trackpad is a piece of shit. takes too long to move the cursor and scroll, despite changing the sensitivity to lowest and setting scrolling speed to fastest. bad input latency as well. I come from an Asus Zenbook and I swear it took me like a week to get used to because it's so shitty.
>screen is so dim, have to set it to 75%. I'm not joking.
>overheats and fan runs like crazy when using it while charging
>coil whine when in sleep and charging
>webcam is shit quality despite being FHD, actually worse than HD webcams in other laptops
>never use the 2in1 tablet function anyway, but when I did use it I had problems with palm rejection, causing it to scroll or zoom
Now I bought the Dell XPS 13 instead, it's coming Monday. However I have problems selling the HP Spectre X360, no one fucking wants it because it's an HP Spectre! Who the fuck buys HP laptops at premium prices? If I were to sell a Dell XPS, I wouldn't had as much of a problem selling it. It's been like a week and I only had 3 people reply, 2 people offered $300 below what I asked for. And I bought this for almost $500 off retail price! Fuck.
>TL;DR: Don't buy HP laptops, even if they're premium
Almost, but not quite. Document assembly and other stuff on MS Office isn't quite as good on iOS as it is on Mac or Windows. It's essential for some heavy lifting work.
their spectre line is shit as well.
>t. hp spectre x360 owner
Which model? I can only find the touchscreen one, and I'm unsure that that's the "best" option
9370
Major? If you do CAD or video editing you want a dGPU, even if weak. You will likely want something that has enough ram to have a browser open and then maybe Visual Studio or MATLAB or whatever you use.
If 0.8kg makes a difference for you get your ass to Jow Forums little soyboy.
it does make a huge difference you dumb ass faggot.
Get a refurbished Thinkpad X230 that has an SSD and 8GB RAM off ebay (thinkstore24). Buy a new 96Wh battery for it. Costs less than 340$ and is perfect for your purpose.
How are you crippling yourself? Literally What the fuck Am I reading? Lol I had two classes where we used Linux and we could just use a vm software for them. Even in the workplace there still isn't a lot of Linux use unless you're working directly with servers

what's with this board and the fascination for memepads?
autists who bought their thinkpads from 2010 and still think thinkpads are good to this day
Are the new XPS 13 keyboards any better? When I looked at it couple years back it was unusuable for me. Now I'm mostly on Macbook Pros as a development machine but curious what the premium windows machine is like.
lemme run CAD/CAE on an ipad pro
yeah no
They are m x220 is holding up great, just can't take on it
hI'd definitely recommend checking out the Xiaomi Notebook Pro:
i7-8550U
16gb RAM
Nvidia MX150 dedicated graphics
256gb storage with space for another m2 drive
It's also got insane battery life. Comes with chinkypoo Windows installed, i just wiped that and installed a fresh W10 and added another 256gb to dual-boot with Arch Linux.
Currently doing my Masters in Compsci, but I do 3D/CG work too which is why I need Windows and dedicated graphics for when I'm not at my desktop. It's able to run games like Fortnite and Rocket League at 60fps if that's your thing too. My biggest concern is the glass screen which can be annoying in certain light environments, especially if you prefer dark themes like myself.
This, just buy a used thinkpad for 2-300 bucks instead of getting a 1000 dollar laptop (i.e. don't get a new thinkpad either, they are good but pricey).
The build quality is way better than most mid-range laptops and you won't be afraid to lose it or to play around with linux distros.
What is a computer?
if you want build quality, linux compatibility and a decent bang for buck ratio, check out system76 and other related brands. basically you're getting a bit more for your money because you're not paying the "windows tax"
