put it in microwaves then put the microwave in Siria

You would have to throw it into the fire to really erase it

I'd sandpaper the surface for good measure.

i keep a bulk-tape eraser handy just in case

but for the lullz you should dump it in HCl

smelt them into ingots

no, you need to rub semen on it to get the data off

I actually did rub the disks to each other just in case so they're all scratchy now.

Nope, still can see that illegal content just by looking at the photo.

What are HDD plates made of?

"all scratchy" is not enough

Why do you care about erasing your fuckin' aincient maxtor hard drive, it's what, 160GB or something?

mythril

80 GB, lol

No, feds can still recover your cp. Do thermite

Oh and why? No reason, I want to take it (among other junk) to a proper electronic disposal facility. Who knows what greasy fat fuck is going to try and recover my files.

Cobalt-based alloys usually.

aluminium

I would hit the plates with a hammer, and try to scratch the surfaces a bit more, just to be sure.

I'm pretty sure it's dwarven metal

Mirrors for maximum reflectivity

Yes, as I said, mythril.

you're full of surprises mr Baggins

heat it up to the Curie temperature.

nippon steel folded over 1000 times

thermite it

The best is to apply full-disk encryption to it before trashing it. That way you don't have to worry about the data being recoverable or not since it'll be unreadable anyway.

why not run a secure erase on it from a software such as dban, kroll, tabernus ect. it could've then been given to a local charity or something

I sold my old drives for a few bucks, this one didn't spin and thus didn't work. I didn't remember what was on it or if it was even encrypted or not.

I realize it's unlikely that someone would take out the plates into an identical functioning drive and see what's on them. I destroyed it just for the heck of it.

I work for a hospital and all drives that have patient data are put through a machine that's basically a weed eater for metal and ground into fine shavings

not kidding

fuck off pedo you kill a thread for this

Legit thought those were blobs at first....i need to get out more

you know that enhanced secure erase followed by random write over the drive is unrecoverable, and all people who think CIA and NSA can read that data fell for the meme, right?

if you are really paranoid just use full disk encryption and then do ESE. the data is gone after that.

law enforcement exfiltrates data using malware from a running machine, no one bothers to do forensics on encrypted drives

>data security is for pedophiles
wow thanks for letting me know

Just shatter the platters. Is this a joke?

adamantium alloy

>he doesn't know feds can find data by reading pieces with their atomic microscopes

don't throw it away all at once
geocache it and spread each piece all over NYC
even the screws

If it's one of those for the heck type of deals, why not scalvage the magnets, those things are nice neodynium ones, fairly big in those older hard disks too.
Could be useful for god knows what

Not until you cum on it lad

Run it through a Blendtec until it's disk smoke.

the obvious solution is for OP to stop being a fag.

Careful though, don't breath that

i think there are notebooks HDDs using ceramic too

No, I can smell those anime pictures from thousands of miles away.

Depends. Did you just do something extremely illegal on them? No. If the government /really/ wanted to do, they could probably get some shit off of it. If this is just general tin foil shit though, yea you're good.

Just encrypt your drives with a long password. Nobody will recover it then.

Modern disks can be securely erased just by overwriting them with zeroes once because the tracks are so dense nowadays it's enough.
I'd be cautious with old disks, though.

>Really determined historians 10000 years into the future will see your porn collection.
How about none of that, thanks.

At least grind up the disks and smoke them to retain their information...what a waste

Will it blend?

Nice try, NSA.

This. Also it disgusts me when they find some ancient burial place and then device to move the corpses to a museum to showcase. They were buried to rest in peace ffs

katana steel.

>device
*they device

I bet you use placebo like GNU shred too

I work at a company that specializes in that. It's a wood chipper for metal. Eats anything from hard drives to computer cases.

You should always keep a jar of thermite on the desk just in case you need it.

what would the size of the disk have to do with anything?

magnets

Really, none of you?
FFS! Buncha slack jawed faggots!

Why does
>wipe -iqr
always show
>"Wioing..."

glass?

If you want security erase, use SSD.

hdparm --security-erase takes seconds and guarantees that data is not recoverable.

What are you hiding on there, OP?

proprietary corporate code

Is the code under the age of 18?

Melting an HDD is the only was to ensure that no data can be retrieved. That or grind the actual hard disk into dust. Anything other method, Fire, Acid, Sandpaper, or breaking into pieces, is a placebo. Granted, unless you've attracted federal attention, I'm pretty sure the aforementioned methods would be fine. Mostly because local law enforcement doesn't have the resources or time necessary to disk splice and or perform magnetic field analysis or electronic microscope analysis.

The same thing all plates are made from
Pottery

Last time I wanted to fully destroy an HDD I took an acetylene torch to it and melted the platters and the casing together into glob of shit.

Not the guy that replied to you before, but a little bit of sctratching is nothing compared to the ole sandpaper treatment. If there's stuff on it you really don't want someone to see then sandpaper it properly

4U

Put them between two pieces of heavy card board and smash with heavy object. Use eye protection and gloves. Some discs are metal plated glass. Can explose on impact and cause injury to eyes and stuff.

>use encryption on disk always
>when not using the disk anymore, zero it out
>open hard drive
>shatter the disks (idk what old platters are made of, but new ones in laptop rives shatters when dropped)
>take the pieces and throw it in the trash
They'll have to piece together the shattered platters, realign them if its multiple lplatter, use electron memescopy to read the overwritten data, then use some super computer to crack the encryption, all for you fury porn.

You don't have to melt it, just heat it past the curie point. You can also try sticking it into an industrial demagnetizer, I kinda want to see what one of those does to a hard drive (they sure do a good job of making tablet press dies not stick to each other at least).

Take the platters to a foundry and drop them into an electric arc furnace. Or make huge holes in them with a pickaxe. Or just belt sand the magnetic layer off. You could even drop them into a lava tube in Hawaii.

If you care that much then you’d swipe magnets across it and then throw the whole thing through a shredder.

>You could even drop them into a lava tube in Hawaii.
It's time to let it go Frodo...

Just soak the platter in vinegar overnight. Metal oxides and acids don't mix. Then go to any commercial store and slip it in the trash on your way out.

0 writing the drive even once actually deletes all data and is easier than breaking things like an angry chimp.

>not having rune HDD plates

1 "0" or random pass is going to mess it up enough nobody is going to mess with it unless they're 100% sure there is something on it worth spending kilobucks for recovery. Even then 100% recovery is unlikely

>he STILL can't use dragon HDD plates

>b-b-b-but muh gorrillion dollaryoo electorn microscopre that I've got in the back of the shed

Can still recognize it as a HD, so no.

rare sillicon mined from silicon valley

then encrypt the disk before zero-write so the glow-in-the-dark CIA niggers can only recover garbage.

h'haaaaaaaaa

I believe it is something hard as the name sugests.

Coins that weren't salty enough.

You just have to hit it with a blowtorch until it turns red hot
This

Actually made me laugh.

Lmbao just don't do anything illegal

>Platters are in one piece
no

you've done enough damage now that if you throw this away in the garbage then no one will spend the thousands required to recover that data. I understand your paranoia though.

Broken SSDs

Throw it into a volcano.
