Shill me on a Smart Home

Shill me on a Smart Home.

Is this really good? How huge are security holes?

bump

Good for everyone watching you.

>Go on vacation
>have a Smart(tm) Home(tm)
>waterline to toilet springs a leak
>sensor detects water leak
>servo motor turns off water
>calls a plumber for you

>have a dumb home
>no water leak sensor
>no servo motor on shutoff valve
>get home after one week of leakage
>1200sqft of floor ruined, mold, rot setting in all over
>have to crawl in mud under house getting bit by spiders and rats along the way to shutoff water
>call plumber, carpenter, electrician,
>$35,000 STARTING in damages
>insurance drops you after they payout claim
>can't get new insurance because you're a risk now
>in violation of mortgage contract
>bank forcloses
>live in a box under the bridge shooting up with Tyrone for the rest of your life

don't be dumb user

I guarantee US intelligence uses this data

The only good smart home is the one you wire and program DIY style
Anything else is a scam

>anything IoT
trash

Sure turn your house in a literal botnet

i would say it wouldn't be too bad, but all the devices are connected to the internet

Don't leave the water or other utilities on while youre on vacation then.

Now burglaries, thats something you might want to be notified of.

Hue lights, Smart speaker, Smart meters for water/electricity and a proper doorbell with a camera is all you need, additionally if you live in a house you might throw in the Tesla Powerwall and some solar energy

>go on vacation
>smart home sends all home activity to an unsecured s3 bucket in Amazon
>someone mines bucket looking for empty houses
>robs you blind

>just want ansystem to use my phone as a smart remote for everything in my house
>literally everything is IoT garbage
I just want a closed system
I dont want to control my lights or AC from work, thats fucking retarded

Proprietary smart home systems are retarded because the companies behind the product will drop support in less than five years and you can't expect the user community to patch security holes either because the whole thing is proprietary.

Well too bad, you don't get anything that isn't internet-connected, because the device-maker can sell the resulting """telemetry""" to advertisers and make more money that way.

It's the biggest meme of the decade.

>decade
Smart homes are something from 2006, now is just smartphone controlled.

Smartwatches are the biggest meme of the decade

Fancy lights and speakers are a preference, not a need.
You should get security cameras, broken glass sensors, and door break in sensors, too.
I think you could just block all data packets sent from the gizmos to any external addresses, or just hook them all up to a router not connected to a modem.

> making your house hackable
Who needs an axe or lock picking skills if all you need is a script?

If you use raspis and do it yourself, it may be fine (and you can learn a lot in the process). But installing some proprietary IoT solution is guaranteed to be insecure botnet.
