It's not that big a stretch, unless you're editing uncompressed video what is displayed in a video editor is only an approximation of the encoded data. It assembles a segment of video at play time from encoded stuff, you don't edit it as it is visible.

Lightworks is the most stable imo

I love that people suggest this to someone who most likely doesn't know as if it makes everything easier.
I mostly use ffmpeg to cut the source material up and then edit those in kdenlive, so maybe it is helpful to you as well:
Say you want the first 10 seconds of your source in a separate file.
ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -ss 00:00:00 -to 00:00:10 -c copy intro.mp4

It doesn't re-encode when you copy, so it is instant and you can write it in a script so you can "fine tune" the timing if you aren't sure.

So what I do is I make a recording or two.
Then I make the cuts in a seperate directory where running the script deletes the cuts and makes new ones.

lightworks is really good, although the free version is limited in export options
blender can do basic editing and can be extended using readily available python scripts, if you want take the time to learn its interface/workflow
i've been playing around with cinelerra and it works great for simple edits and some effects. you will run into issues with codecs as well, though. but yeah... just take the time to convert the source files and everything should be fine

does handbrake even edit things? I've only used it for ripping. Also iirc it only handled mp4 video streams in mp4 or mkv containers. Not exactly versatile.

Blender can do a whole hell of a lot more than basic editing. It has the whole node tree for effects right there, you can project your video into the 3d and combine things in any which way.

As for any video editor you've got it'll probly output some kind of raw video that you can encode with ffmpeg or something.

I personally go through a video player and mark down timestamps before ever going to any editor. There's a bit of trial and error but only because there's no EXACT way to accurately pinpoint frames with compressed video.

Well you still HAVE the VSE even when going outside of that specific mode. VSE alone still handles 100% of editing needs, with some learning 2 keyframe n shit.

It is more than clips back to back, sure, but having multiple videos on top of each other is not hard to do in kdenlive.
