Unix shell

z, it's the last letter so why use anything else
Gnulinux
zsh
bash
OpenBSD-pdksh on OpenBSD, mksh on everything else
I stick with bash because I've never had much of a reason to switch away from it
>Gnulinux
its just linux
and its an OS,not a shell
Bash.
Gnulinux is my shell, and its not just lin*x
it's not and it is
zsh, but fish looks really interesting.
but it is and it isn't
but that's wrong
There are many things wrong on this world, I just wanted to name my shell project Gnulinux because it sounded cool to me lol
That's extremely dumb
E X T R E M E L Y
Just tried fish and liked it, much faster and more intuitive than bash.
Often, whatever's the default shell. Otherwise, ksh93. Korn shell is awesome.
ksh93 is horrible for interactive use
How? Why? Did you forget to do ksh -o vi or ksh -o emacs?
mksh, dash, rc and ash
fish
plasmashell
kek
bump
ksh93
IDLE
rc
it's the future
it's so quick and responsive and it's so easy to write in it
rc is the only correct answer
Also 9term terminal emulator if you have 3 buttons mouse
How ???
How can i do this??
I use fish for interactivity and dash for everything else.
/thread
cmd :^)
>cmd
>unix shell
why mksh?
mksh for interactive use, dash/rc for scripting
You havent tried zsh/oh-my-zsh
Patrician
The shell for basedboys
Still comfier than bash.
>You havent tried zsh/oh-my-zsh
With fish I don't have to wait for shell to spawn.
And it's better out of the box.
unix was a proprietary system in the 70s
stop using words you don't understand
zsh is the only good shell for both uses, scripting or interactive.
Stop writing non-bash or posix scripts. Seriously.
both are shit, so no faggot. cry more.
Fish because it's the only correct option.
And what things would I get if I did so, and why would I feel I wanted them?
>oh-my-reddit
nothing. oh-my-zsh is garbage and zsh devs agree.
zsh itself is fine. it removes retarded legacy bullshit in POZZIX shells such as word splitting for instance.
there are many more technical reasons why zsh is superior to shit shells like bash.
bash or eshell
Coглaceн, бpaт.
Bash is fine.
How about elvish?
fish isn't really a unix shell either
I use dash, everything else is bloat.
I want to switch from zsh to mksh but I don't know if it's autism. Also I had a dream that tsh is better than mksh
PD ksh
>Stop writing non-posix scripts
Fixed that for you, user
stop shilling pozzix garbage.
Wow I want to be based, should I switch to zsh + ohmyzsh?
zsh with ohmyzsh is masterrace
>so many people recommending oh-my-bloat
There's literally no reason to use it. If you want to install plugins just do it by hand instead of pumping your shell full of bloat
despite the attention whores (gnulinux, cmd, etc):
zsh/omzsh for interactive
dash for scripts
not everyone is using a 10 year old laptop here fuck off suckless faggots
zsh. I'm a newbie to FreeBSD, so I went with the first thing suggested.
>I love to install software that does everything I don't need just because it happens to do one simple thing I need that can be done almost as easily without that software
How do I know you're gay
Also
>zsh
>suckless
I'd be using rc or at most mksh
>unix shell
Fuck ur shit. If you want an umbrella term say unix-like. Unix is a proprietary and long dead pile of shit.
*nix > Unix-like
Reminder that zsh users are the scum.
They have 100miles powerline PS1, solarized colors and the only use for the CLI is the newest onions colorscript and installing oh-my-onions via curl | sudo
> They have 100miles powerline PS1
I have a prompt that starts with C:\\ and replaces all the slashes in the cwd with backslashes. No colours or powerline.
> solarized colors
Suggest something better
While Plan 9 and inferno are awesome, this thread is about Unix.
>I don't know if it's autism
It is.
I used rc for a while, but I quickly realised that I can't get around the absence of a history mechanism (!!, !!:1, ^foo^bar), CTRL+R history, and escape characters. It was a shame, because I though I was totally sold on the idea of a suckless shell that actually has a comprehensive man page.
Maybe there's something fundamentally wrong with my workflow? I don't know. So I guess I'm sticking with bash for now.
rc has a unix port, and 9term with rc are available on plan9port
Well there is a history mechanism, under the unix port, just press up arrow. You can use unix keyboard shortcuts instead of ! bangs.
>ctrl r history
not needed
>escape characters
Under 9term, everything is literal so it doesn't need them, you can just enter ^whatever and it'll be in the shell.
There's also a good succless shell that doesn't have bash bloat, mksh
But that's not suckless.
The next stage after suckless obsession is realizing that suckless means "missing lots of useful features".
> being this much of a pretentious dickhead
How easy is it to switch shells on a unix system is it a thing you have to decide on at install time or can you switch with little effort later, I do want to give zsh a try sometime.
rc started its life on version 10 unix
Because it's portable
I wasn't being pretentious, I was saying it's dumb because it's dumb.
It takes seconds to switch with chsh at any time. The most time consuming part would be rewriting your .bashrc (if you have one) for the new shell
>>ctrl r history
>not needed
said no one ever who actually does anything related in any way whatsoever to using the shell productively
Once when writing some text parsing stuff in Ruby for a batch of files which led me to consider the potential of using IRB as a shell, and I ended up learning there exists a Ruby-based shell.
Should I try fish or oh-my-zch?
>no !! or !$
oilshell :)
Definitely fish
good
use chsh, or even
exec tcsh
Exchange tcsh for your shell of choice.
GNOME shell :^)
mksh
im not a minimal fag but oh-my-reddit is textbook bloated
omg so based! amirite guys! ;D
kill yourself
eshell (piggy backing on bash) but with the fish completion engine
Your shell is weak
What advantages does zsh have over bash?
Every shell is better than bash, because GNU is incompetent.
Better how
bash
