Especially with long playlists, I've seen the number regularly go into the low thousands, and I've seen it as high as 37k.
That said, I think whatever script that tries to load ads during the video was broken that time, as it continued counting up even when I wasn't doing anything in that tab.
It's not just youtube, many sites are utter shit when it comes to continuously trying to load ads.
