Is there a term to describe all Windows, Mac and Linux machines?

Is there a term to describe all Windows, Mac and Linux machines?

"PC" excludes Macs, "desktop" excludes laptops, and there are debates over whether a mobile device counts as a "computer" or not.

Use the term "systems"

Basically covers everything that has a processor in it.

macOS = Linux + [Windows-Games]

PCs. Mac's are PCs. The whole Mac isn't PC thing was a marketing meme.

>"PC" excludes Macs

No.

"rigs"

>macOS

Probably PC, since the difference between Macs and the Wintel machines is moot at this point (will change once Apple gets off the Intel train).

Arguably "computer" as well, since to the normies, smartphones and tablets form a different category than desktops and laptops, even though they are all 'computers' as well, just like '[game] console' vs PC.

Should have clarified, I meant *exclusively* Windows, Mac and Linux machines.

Ah, Personal Systems or "PC" since it is a personal computer

What's a computer?

All of them are computer, idiot

Macs are PCs

Workstation.

>"PC" excludes Macs
Wrong.

Both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook have referred to Macs as "PCs" (albeit usually when trying to imply they're an old idea to be replaced with iPads)

>personal computers excludes macs

only lamers thinks mac is not pc.

The idea is macs not being PCs were that they had ppc processors so were architecturally different devices.
Since they adopted Intel x86/64. They are exactly the same

>The idea is macs not being PCs were that they had ppc processors so were architecturally different devices.
That's because IBM tried to copyright the name PC for 8086 and successors.

IBM compatible PCs. (if we are not talking about obsolete G4 rubbish)

Most modern desktop computers are not IBM compatible anymore though, nowadays it's just a generic, non-technical term for actually indicating perdonal computers

They are indeed. You still can buy modern mobos with ISA slot. The problem is that it all is a simulation on CPU level.

Shitpost-mobile.

PC does not exclude macs, you stupid fucking faggot

Yes - microcomputers.

You mean, something like "Windows, Mac and Linux machines"? It's software, dipshit.

PC/AT

No. Why would you want a term that generalized anyway? I don't want to be associated with faggots.

Computer is too broad.
PC does not work because all of those OSes can be used on servers or phones.
IBM compatible does not work since these OSes can be used on non-Intel computers.

niggas?

This. It may be true that most people wouldn't think of a mac when thinking of a PC but same goes for computers and mobile phones and OP states that is not specific enough. OP is a dumbass as usual.

If you say 'Personal Computer' instead of 'PC' then I think it pretty clearly indicates what you want. Or 'Desktops/Laptops'

Electronic computational machines.

Computers, you retard.

>PC excludes Macs
That's wrong.
Machine using Mac OS is just a personall computer with a more retarded OS.

just use computer
the only debate of whether small devices with fully fledged microprocessors are computers is among retards who don't know what a computer is
only pedantic morons on the losing side of an argument will nitpick your usage of "computer" attempting to feel like they won by technicality, and if some idiot starts blathering about phones and microcontrollers when you're clearly talking about desktops or servers in context, their braindead opinions aren't worth worrying about anyway

they may technically be personal computers but the acronym PC is pretty much synonymous with Wintel IBM compatibles and no longer a good term to use when generalizing all personal computers, for which the expanded term is more suitable

What specifically differentiates desktops and laptops from other computers such as a raspberry pi or a smart phone?

Form factor and use case.

x86_64 steam-gaymes-compatible computers.

can you be more specific about factor and use case?

It seems as though it's becoming just about form.

>"PC" excludes Macs
Wrong.

>but the acronym PC is pretty much synonymous with Wintel IBM compatibles and no longer a good term to use when generalizing all personal computers
Again, WRONG.

PC = Personal Computer. It literally does not mean anything else. To say otherwise would be like saying app means something other than application.

Every Mac ever sold is and always has been a PC. Apple can choose not to call them PCs, but that doesn't change the fact that that is what they are.

It's Apple themselves who separated Mac and PC in their ads, and now they even try to separate their devices from computers whatsoever, so it's no wonder that people think like that.

My experience is that 'computer' is the most understood way to express it if you want to include all desktop/laptop systems regardless of OS.

It seems to convey a feeling of a serious computing device compared to mobile or game devices to most people. People will also think that PC refers to a Windows PC or non-Mac PC due to marketing.

Technically PC includes any general purpose personal computing devices including many smartphones and tablets but no-one uses the shorthand when they mean that.
