I'm about to move for the first time and I don't wanna get into shit with the landlord in any way.
Can they somehow find out what sites (namely porn) I browse, can they find out if I torrent something, etc? And how can prevent being found out/getting into trouble without giving up on something I've expected to be available so far in my life?

Yes, your landlord has full access to all of your isp records. So they can investigate every site you visit if they want. Luckily most landlords don't know this. There is nothing you can do to prevent this, as it's recorded on the ISP level.

Get a VPN, op.

I only vaguely know what a VPN is. What is it exactly? What should I look for in one? And does it make a difference for my case?

Living sucks.

VPN is a Virtual Private Network
It connects you to a network and forwards your traffic through it. It's encrypted, so the connection just shows that you're connecting to that server, but not where it goes after that, and anything they pick up on the connection is random bits to them.
If you're just worried about the landlord, and not any CIAniggers, just look for whatever cheapest one there is that matches your needs.

can you visit clearnet sites through TOR?

What the fuck? Do you guys use communal internet or something? I have a landlord too but had to pay for my own service and install, as it very well should be.

Yes, but tor's very slow (like 150 KB/s).

Also check all power sockets/adapters and any nooks and crannies for audio and video bugs. Though it's technically against the law, landlords are known to spy on their tennants often and usually don't suffer any legal ramifications.

This.
I've never been in an apartment where you didn't have you own separate service.

I pay $70/mo for my internet, and only I have access to it. Not my landlord. Not the guy next to me. Just me.

Uh no.

Your ISP drags a line to your building. Then they install a modem. Then they give you a "modem" and that's it. Your landlord does not have access to the information being received and transmitted, only you and the ISP does. Now, here's the kicker. Your landlord could put a router between the two ISP modems and sniff your packets and see your information. If you care about this shit, use a VPN, but most VPNs are honeypots that'll log and sell your data if somebody wants it.

>sniff your packets and see your information
90% sites that have information worth stealing use https, so this doesn't even matter.

>most VPNs are honeypots
you dont know what a honeypot is

>that'll log and sell your data
I believe most VPN's only start logging if law enforcement targets you, in which case by law they are required to monitor you. VPN's are not a replacement for Tor, nor have they ever been. They're for avoiding ISP snooping and copyright trolls, not national security.

>sell your data
[citation needed]

Jesus op, how fucking young are you?
why would your landlord have any access to your internet connection if you're the one paying for it?

some apartments have public wifi I think

Where? maybe in some Eurotrash country. but in America there is no public wifi.

Use a custom DNS so that way your ISP doesn't have the logs. On top of that use a VPN.

Thats enough for every good quality page

VPS.

There's tons of Apartments in america that provide free wifi.

But no one in their right mind is going to want to use an apartment's shit wifi. It'll probably be slower than 4G and very insecure.

>using free wifi without vpn or vps
Might as well fuck an ugly-ass hooker on the side of the street with no protection

internet access doesn't mean free wifi. it typically means you can either use a shitty PC in the front office or their shitty wifi. OR you have ACCESS to BUY an internet connection. I highly doubt you are going to find an apartment where you will have free wifi in your apartment.
Remember this is America...
once you move out and pay your own bills you will understand this.

My apartment info sheet said the same thing OP. It simply meant the apartment was ready to go to hook up internet and I wouldn't have to run wire/pay someone to run wire in my walls. There was literally a small box in my living room wall where the TV would go with numbers to call Verizon or Comcast if I wish to sign up. I pay $30/month for 100/100 through Verizon btw.

What VPN should I get to ward off CIA Niggers?

bump. Pls answer this. Is hide.me/de/proxy good enough?
