better question is whether there's any reason to use Atom over Visual Studio Code

>Microsoft

>GitHub

Open source and great git integration

It would be great if it weren’t electronshit that takes a minute to load up and overall feels sluggish

It's free as in freedom.
It's written in a better language.
It has a lot of cool add-ons, though Sublime might have that too.
It's probably faster since JS is way faster than Python.

>faster
Lmao. Have you ever used Atom and Sublime?

Microsoft VSCode = great software that does not respect your privacy built by skilled programmers
Github Atom = OK software that does not respect your privacy built by communist SJW leftist shithole company

freedumbs

>great software that does not respect your privacy built by skilled programmers
You can build from source and their's no telemetry. You have to edit the products.json file to enable extensions though.
For archfags I think their code-oss on the AUR that does this for you.

Any reason to use Atom, Sublime, or VS Code over GNOME Builder?

>Atom
Bloated Electron bloat
>VS Code
Optimized Electron bloat
>Sublime
Absolutely proprietary
>GNOME Builder
Fast, free, beautiful, has a native look, no blurry fonts, good resource usage, huge amount of intelligent development behind it (not like other random GNOME apps).

Restart to apply~

See If you don't compile from source you're using proprietary software. The distributed build uses the open source version as a base. Think Chromium vs Chrome.

You still have to apply Regardless.

If you're going to consider Atom & Sublime, then also throw in Eclipse Neon, which I think is better than both of those (C, PHP, JS, Python)

There is no reason to use Sublime in 2018 either.
Speed? Vert fast. But if I want to quick edit some files I can just use Notepad++.
Features? Not as good as VS Code. VSC has slower startup time but if you actually develop something, better use an IDE like VS Code.
And
>it just werks

>vs code
>IDE

What about Intellij IDEA?

It practically is. It's a gimped version of Visual Studio. And to be honest it is big, bloaty, and slow. Microsoft has the amazing ability to do that with all of their software.

Sublime is miles faster than Atom. It's written in C++. Only Sublime's add-ons are written in Python.

I think the only thing going for Sublime now is its speed. Still think speed is an important factor though. IDEs and JS editors can feel painfully slow sometimes.

All of them have slow startup but
Sublime > VSCode > Atom

Use vim.

Also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, stick to 80 characters please.

I don't get it. Why is there be a chat client in a text editor?

This

I think for most people the decision comes down to cost and speed. Everything else effectively operates the same.

Collaborative coding, sorta like google docs

back to the 80s please

god damn millennials are awful. Second only in worthlessness to pajeet.

lmao @ this neet

sir, please take the poo to the loo

ahahahaha go back to bed grandpa

Reasons to use any of these faggy electron shit-stains over emacs:

Nil

Emacs is a pretty decent operating system imo, it just lacks a good text editor.

>C

this thread is about shitty text editors

evil mode

such great IDE features and autocomplete.. atom is truly a masterpiece

just for comparisson, here is pajeet tier vscode autocomplete

>Atom
>takes ~3 seconds for every new instance to start even for a high end pc
I'll pass

>using a proprietary editor
why would any programmer do this?

No. Use emacs, it's better than both of them.

Atom is MIT

t. Never used VS Code

Sublime isn’t made with electron

github.com/Microsoft/vscode/issues/16131

whats the point in buying a license?
to get rid of the prompt?

lol

But you typed more letters for vscode

FREEDOM

Atom is free software.

No reason to use sublime for me either, kate just works.

This, it never really feels bloated to me

3 seconds. I know people on Jow Forums are obsessed with this kind of shit but come on, you don't have 3 seconds?

3 seconds is fine but that's 3 seconds idling. You need to context switch to idle thread and then back again. Shit sucks.

It's not about "a few seconds"
It's about how much time that adds up to during a week of work, Atom being slow was basically my only issue with it - however more often than not it was incredibly annoying
I've since move to sublime and I'm extremely happy

It adds up. It's also pretty annoying to wait 3-5 seconds every time you want to make some quick edits to a file. Vscode starts up way faster too, so I don't know what the Atom guys are doing.

Is this actually good? Open sores, not electron based AND being not shit seems too good to be true.

Why would I use shitty GNOME software when I could use the godlike Qt Creator?
