This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
ANSWER this post or time will end and watches become obsolete!!!!!
Asher Bailey
Hello friends,
I am currently in the market for a new watch. At this point, I've boiled it down to two of the same watches — one with an ETA 2824-2 Basic Bitch grade, and the other with a Miyota 9015 (which is about $100 cheaper). Should I just bite the bullet and go with the Swiss movement, or accept the well-acclaimed and modern 9015?
My cheap Chinese automatic watch makes noise when I gently shake it due to the rotor being loose. Would I be able to open it up and easily tighten the rotor or would I need a new bearing or something.
It doesn't, but people always talk about it in that manner.
I also want to know which watches will decrease in price the least.

>who the fuck gives a a fuck what Moon thinks He’s the president of South Korea retard.
Jordan Ortiz
then buy second-hand, they're less likely to fall much more in price then
Jaxson Miller
so? The only Moon that's relevant was the UN Moon

Should I buy a broken Seiko 5 Actus SS for $15?
Connor Scott
If you literally mean a 2824 standard grade (there is no "basic"), a 9015 is a higher quality movement; it occupies a space between 2824 standard and 2824 elabore. Similarly, the miyota 8xxx are a bit below 2824 standard.
Elijah Walker
Tell me you’re joking.
We’re talking about peace between North and South Korea. The president of South Korea is one of the two most important people in this whole thing.
> That same off center window you see in all 2824s Why do they do this? Surely it would be better to center the window and just not have the balance staff jewel centered in the window.
Joseph Ross
Bad idea to buy broken mechanicals unless you specifically want to take them apart or swap movements, and with an Actus the best bet is to repair the movement since the faces are usually rather unique.
Owen Anderson
So you don't like these watches?
Isaac Campbell
Another bullshit Instagram “microbrand” (read: off brand) with bland, soulless, “minimalist” watches with zero effort on their part. It looks like they use mostly Ronda quartz movements with the exception of the atrocity you posted which uses an STP automatic movement. I’d guess that over 90% of the price of those watches is purely profit for them. Buyer beware.
Josiah Smith
Many watchmakers in the US will not work on vintage Japanese pieces and refer you to Seiko, and that will cost more than the watch is worth. However, when you get it back it will look and work like it's brand new and you may be able to make your money back reselling it, so if you've got like $400+ to blow, go for it.
Chase Hughes
pink seiko 5 :^)
You are adorable by the way.

> STP clone > $1690 omg it's worse than I imagined
Landon Bennett
And Ronda quartz is not good?
STP auto movement is not good?
Christian Robinson
There's no such thing as a good watch, just a good price. Those are not good prices.

Nice komandirske

Uhh how do you know it's loose? Rotors normally make noise... and they aren't fastened in a manner in which tightening screws makes them make less noise.
90% probability that when you get it open and try to move the screws, your hand will slip and jam the screw driver right into the balance wheel and destroy the movement.
Sebastian Ross
what is the difference between 6R15 and 6L35 movement? seiko I mean
Alexander Wood
those shit DG movements have loud rotors to begin with. Unless you can feel and hear the rotor scraping, the screw may already be fully torqued.
Sebastian Gonzalez
Wtf do you mean by that? If there are no good watches, then why would any of you buy a rolex?
I can hear the rotor scraping the case back. When I move the watch back and forth I can feel the rotor moving axially.
Tyler Lewis
Objectively this. They’ll both do their job, although I’m not sure how well the STP will do it. If you buy one of those then people who don’t know much about watches either won’t care about it or will wonder why you didn’t buy a Daniel Wellington (which it basically is) and people who like watches will look down on you as the bumbling idiot that you are for getting ripped off and buying garbage. Also, I don’t like the Bauhaus style.
Joseph Sanders
At the risk of replying to a troll, a modern Rolex 3235 is a good watch at its price point. It would not be a good watch at at $70k pricepoint. Similarly, an STP clone in a basic, rounded out case with some machine guilloche slapped on the dial could be a good watch at a $200 price point, maybe even $300 I guess, but not $1700.
Isaac Jackson
The bearing is probably done. You can't really fix that without replacing parts, but you can't know without looking so crack that bastard open and take a peek.
Elijah Nguyen
With a vintage low end Seiko your best bet would be to find a similar model that uses the same movement that has a working movement but cosmetic damage (so you can get it for cheap) and then find an independent watchmaker locally that works on vintage Seikos and can service the working movement and swap it into the case you like.
Seiko will not service a vintage Seiko 5 model, and even if they would, it would be totally crazy to spend $400 having it serviced when a vintage Seiko 5 would never be worth more than like $100 no matter how good condition it was in.
Carson Sanders
>and buying garbage But why are you calling it garbage? Is it because it's a brand new watchcompany that doesn't use their own in-house movement? Yeah, this is a statement that makes sense. But the "there are no good watches"-statement makes no sense at all.

Alright, my bepisquartz purchase was completed by zenmarket but I still have a few yen. What should I order? I was thinking about trying a calorie mate.

Seiko SARX055 for 850€. a few weeks old
yes or no?

Those toes are perfection. I would buy you a nice seiko pretty girl.

The important question is how much do you care about the technical and horological merits of the movement, versus how much to you care about the titanium case and bracelet and the quality of the external finishing?
If you don't care about movements that much, the SARX055 offers by miles the best titanium case and bracelet and the best exterior finishing you will get for less than double or even triple the price, but the 6R15 in it is a bit meh, especially at that price point.
You have to decide this trade off for yourself.

You could try to pick up this cosmotron > 295705340 What movement was your penis again? You could try to pick up a parts version of a compatible lower grade in case you ever need it.
Jaxon Sullivan
can you tell me more about the movement? what does "a bit meh" mean in practice, in real life. how does is compare to more expensive movements
>how much to you care about the titanium case and bracelet and the quality of the external finishing very important to me
The movement is a 6R15, it's roughly comparable to a lower grade ETA 2824-2 or a Miyota 9015. The accuracy should be expected to be around +/- 10 seconds a day in use. More expensive movements than these will typically receive more factory adjustment and as a result be more accurate.
In practical terms, the 6R15 is used in models in the $350-$500 range mostly, and in the price range you are looking at you'd be able to find lots of watches with more adjusted ETA 2824-2 Top Grade movements, but they won't be titanium and won't have anything like that intricate exterior machining and finishing that the SARX055 does.
well damn, I'd rather have a little less accurate movement and better looking exterior
am I a bad person?
Jack Flores
Garbage.
Caleb Hill
h300843623 I could buy this and use it as a fishing weight or something.
Owen Scott
No, personally I think it's a reasonable trade off to make at that price point, though I'm sure some others will disagree. Seiko did release a limited edition version of the SARX057 with a much better movement, but it costs $2,000.
Landon Cox
reminder not to forget to get a nubile horological gf
Yes. The movement is much better, and the case is a newly designed monocoque case externally finished to essentially Grand Seiko standards, including tin disc polishing and heat bluing the second hand.
There's a lot more labour in the limited edition version, hence the higher price. A comparable Swiss watch would be at least $4,000.
