It's a maintained version of KDE3

you can use whatever window manager you want with a de. i used xfce with xmonad for a while before going to lxde with windowmaker. some window managers even have a option to change to another wm while running (twm and ratpoison come to mind) so you could run ratpoison wm within the kde de and tmpwm to i3 and back to ratpoison when you were done with i3. nifty!

It uses less RAM than Xfce nowadays. It's my go to for full desktops, although usually I go with tilers.

Never used 3, (kde4 was released 10 years ago)
back then, I used gnome2.
But the main attraction of kde (now) is krunner.
The plasma widgets are bad and buggy and you can use the applications without KDE.

I see. I can imagine a huge number of issues with it. Having to manage music and voip while you're playing, or wanting to mix music and game sounds and voip with each program being on god knows which OS. Performance loss. Multimonitor issues.
