/tpg/- ThinkPad General

Previous thread: Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Modern models:
>X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU
>T530; W530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.

Fuck me
Is eBay/China my only option for an IPS? Like $70 + 30 day shipping

Attached: IMG_2830.png (750x1334, 1.37M)

Is there a single tablet model that doesn't have a shit battery?

Attached: 1514765313287.png (266x220, 13K)

Nope. You're looking at like 4 hours max, that's with a 9 cell and linux

Did you destroy your screen out of anger, bezelanon?
Seriously now, what the flying fuck happened?

I got four IPS screens (shipping included) for ~150€, it shouldn't be more in the land of the free as in free burgers

Which clit is best?

Mine came with the "soft dome" but I'm inclined to get a "classic dome" aka "cat tongue" because that's what my Grandpa's IBM had in the 90s and I'm a faggot.

>Vertical bar screen artifact out of nowhere
>Pressing against certain parts of bezel makes it disappear
>Everyone online says it's dying and to replace it
>Attempt to fix but cracks when I press circuit board beneath display.

What kind of shit OP is this? Where are the libreboot compatible models? Why are you recommending XX30 models that have shit keyboards?

because it's time to end the autism
an almost 7 year old laptop is not "modern"

>libreboot
too much autism

This. I'm trans and I'm seriously just considering leaving this board and sticking to reddit if they continue to bully us.

stop, seriously. all the memeposting does is eventually raise prices.
but if you actually have a **70p, could you check if the extra mpcie slot takes an msata SSD? I don't know if the 12" models have them but my 8470p does.

yeah well thanks to you faggots harping on and on about your placebo shit there's only like 5 X60's left on ebay and they're all in shit condition other than a completely overpriced one.
I'm with OP on this.

Marketing was really on point back then. Do you think if Lenovo went back to this style marketing + thinkpad products they would see a boost amongst the hipster crowd?

>plebbit tier software ideology

just grab a cheapo TN off ebay and call it a day user

Too bad Windows and Linux are trash. I'll bring the laptop back tomorrow dude. I actually love typing on this thing, but my workflow outside of macOS is awful. How do developers put up with this shit?

>shit keyboard even if it has the same fucking actuation
top meme, it's entirely a matter of preference
>a 7 year old laptop is not modern
that's not really the goal of these threads, anyway a 7 years old laptop can be still excellent and serve well, today and in the foreseeable feature, with just a minimum of tinkering
this, imho only coreboot should be linked. First and foremost, it's the upstream actually doing 99.99% of the work; secondly, because coreboot does not raise "political" issues; last but not the least because they do their best to remove blobs and they will either present the option to employ working, deblobbed alternatives or reference libreboot on their own
does not compute, all my thinkpads are quadcore (bought as dual core, then waited for a deal and upgraded them for 50~60 bucks each, later on I resold the collected i5s for ~20 bucks)
do you even tinker
>he actually believes that shitposting on a pedopornographic forum will raise mememachines' prices
what creates the thinkpad market is: periodic renewal of company laptops & a well-respected 25+ yo brand
don't worry hp is heavily renowned to just be shit
dankpads needs to be purged tbqh

Hackintoshs are the patrician choice

for a choice to be patrician your fundamental four freedoms shall not be hampered

lol it's really patrician to have to use an external mouse because none of the pointing devices work on shitOS right?

>hackintosh
Been there and done that on the desktop my dude. It's alright for personal use, but definitely not a professional option.

2570p doesn't have mSATA.
Well actually it does, but HP locked it to the point where nobody is going to mod it to work.
nice argument, thinkcuck.
Then none of your quad-core thinkpads are 12".
This picture is entirely about x220/x230 vs 2560p/2570p choice most newcomers have in these threads.

less than an hour into the thread and you shit it up even without idab's help
he was actually being somewhat useful last thread too.

Hi idab.

he cute

But i hade one of those at work before i got a X1 instead...
Mine didnt have a scroll fro the clit-mouse,
That made it about 80% useless...

When's the next X1 Carbon coming out? Jan 2019?

>2570p doesn't have mSATA.
>Well actually it does, but HP locked it to the point where nobody is going to mod it to work.
elaborate pls, why not? the slot looks normal on my 8470p and there's the screw hole and everything.

didn't one with the 8th gen quadcore just come out?

bought all of them a while back to try out, soft rim goes in the bin, soft dome is nearly perfect, has the best feel but if you sweat like pig from your figure tips like me it's easy to loose grip, which is what the classic wins hands down every time. the classic will also last a decade of use where as dome will last 1-2 years, and rim will fail almost immediately.

I'm looking for something that can run TF2 and World of Shitcraft (everything else I play would probably need way more power) while away from home. Durability and SSD are a plus.

ya, but I want one with 32gb ram, may be waiting a year or two :(

P50 off the lenovo outlet

I actually have him hidden and hate the fag but in like 20 minutes there was an instant shitfest about
>lol old laptop?

X220 reporting in

The owner not the laptop, that would just be freaky

Mine is fully functional aside from a screen that died of natural causes.
I don't know if I want to give my return address to an user though

Meh I just want a x201 motherboard.

2570p has WWAN port that electrically allows communication between SATA controller and the drive, but BIOS doesn't support mSATA. So system will not boot with such drive.
>8470p
Service manual says 8470p supports 24GB Intel SSD as turbo cache, so for sure it does support mSATA standard. Now the question is what models and if it allows booting from it...
Keep googling senpai. :^)

thinkpads are not for video games, they are for jerking off over because you own a thinkpad

Where can I get one??? I'm not really finding any good deals on ebay.

The smug german obliterated your freedoms when he bantz'd on you
Nobody is retarded enough to try and turn their craptop into a hackbook
Yeah true. I'm pretty sure the old Mac Pros (the non-trashcan ones) will have decent support in the future (right now they're busy with slowly letting go of pre 2010-11 macs in general). The older models have vastly superior hardware to the rest, so it'll take them long enough until they reach the 2013 models and even then, most things will be kept up to date for a few years at the very least). You could also try the more recent iMacs. Sorry for only making desktop suggestions, but they're the best way to get actual professional shit done imo.
I don't own a thinkpad.
However, since I basically threw 700 shekels down the drain for an acer (you heard me right) machine I only use for shitposting, jewtube and tf2, I'm considering selling that and a few old consoles to get a T420 and an old macbook as well as some older macs because muh collection autism

Attached: MacBook 13.jpg (545x450, 34K)

I have an 8gig msata lying around back home, I'll try it after finals (please allah don't let me fail anything).
That sounds like a problem that could be bypassed with coreboot though.
If it doesn't boot off mSATA I can probably have a /boot on an HDD, then have my / on the mSATA slot and run the OS from there using grub.

*compared to the rest

>10s left in auction
>monkey tries to snipe it but all it does is raise the price by like 10 bucks for me

it was at 130 and my max bid was 190
he had no chance

I've never ordered anything on ebay?
How sketchy are "buy now" offers?

I want to add a GPU to my t430, but I can't find anything online about my laptop having the right port for it. I was looking at external gpus but the ones that aren't a wirey mess require a thunderbolt 3 port. Is it possible to add a thunderbolt 3 to my laptop, either by removing some ports or via the expresscard slot? If not, is there any way I can get a GPU in my thinkpad, either internally or through another type of port?

Attached: 1433220080892.jpg (960x960, 40K)

Don't worry, they're all around.

I have this and a few other well designed laptops, because everyone mostly makes disposable shit these days.

dont buy anything with stock images

are you retarded?

I was thinking about possible experiment with re-coating on some seriously damaged covers
For real, not dull plasti-dip-only bs

How about
7 parts "Chalkboard paint" Rust-oleum
1 part "Silver glitter" Rust-oleum
1 part xylene
1 part acrylic black paint

scrub the surface with sand paper
airbrush four times, min 60 minutes between each pass

What's retarded about what I said?

Get an EXP GDC 8.4d (or older) with expresscard cable, power supply (either cheap Dell DA-2 216W one or generic 12V with compatible plug) and obviously the card of your desire.
Internally you can't add a GPU because T430 doesn't have MXM port for that. The only dGPU option this laptop has is nvidia NVS, either 5200m or 5400m (up to 2GB of vRAM). If you don't have it already you can order entire motherboard with this chip and just swap it.

just get a vinyl wrap

they did it right, you did it wrong. You send your real offer in the last 5 seconds only, anything else marks you as a gullible noob.
They weren't responsible for the increased final price, you're the only one to blame for it. This is a rookie mistake. You don't reveal your interest too soon.
not sketchy at all unless they claim grade A+ with stock images and with few collected feedbacks
you're less likely to get a deal, yet again you have the chance to get what you want when you want

Should I get the t70, guys? Its a modded t60.
I like the aspect ratio but problems are I dont know if its the fifteen or fourteen inch version, and I dont know the price either. The faggot sellers wont answer and thats a bad sign.

I was afraid of that. Having to use a full size graphics card and a separate power supply defeats the purpose of having a laptop. It's not portable. That's why I was hoping I could install a thunderbolt 3 port so I could just buy a Sonnet Puck.

Oh well. Thanks anyway

Stefanie Joosten.

carbon fiber looks cool though
>That's why I was hoping I could install a thunderbolt 3 port so I could just buy a Sonnet Puck.
damn son that's single digit iq levels of retardation

"no"
it will invariably looks like a "makeshift solution" (hopefully this is a SJW-approved expression here on reddit)
>looks cool
it will stood out pretty vividly, I prefer meek rubberized black bricks

that's because that pic was taken by a mexican crossdresser
most popular laptop will have pre cut vinyls available

I find it respectable to start bidding in the last day, and sit there bidding for the last 15 minutes.
If the guy isn't there to counter your bid when it ends then he probably wasn't serious in the first place.

>stood
*stand
soft dome > classic dome > soft rim

To the guy in the last thread asking about (PATA) SSDs in the t30 / x31 / t40 etc... I used that exact Kingspec one you posted and it works beautifully without any hiccups.

What happened to the X220 and T420?
They ded?

OP is homosexual

you realize that auto-bidding has been a thing for years now right?

>not wanting to feel the suspense of the last few minutes of bidding

can I get a higher res screen for my x201t i5? Asking for myself.

no

Just bought a W520 off eBay. Seller listed it as FHD, but the max resolution I'm seeing is 1600x900, it also lists the display as "Mobile PC Display". Did I get cucked or is there a driver I'm missing?

Feels bad man.

Do you guys ever get tired of the archaic design of the thinkpad. I was in a group for Uni and everyone had a macbook. While I would so sooner shoot myself than buy a macbook, the design of the thinkpad does grind my gears from time to time.

Attached: 1520574283895.jpg (1200x675, 152K)

Repasted my X220 with no thermal paste (metal on metal). Temps are better than old thermal paste, but slightly worst than fresh thermal paste. What do you think, should I just leave it bare?

Also, what a pain in the ass:
>20+ screws
>unhooking fragile plastic
>unhooking fragile connectors
>have to remove wifi and bluetooth adapters
>have to unscrew VGA connector from chassis
>have to remove screen to get at powerjack screw
>basically have to disassemble entire laptop to remove motherboard to get at heatsink
>spend 15 minutes fitting antenna cables to fit in corner of palmrest groove else it doesn't sit
>crack palmrest in the process
Whoever says Thinkpads are serviceable is a liar. Cheap plastic garbage.

>small and portable (11-13")
>relatively fast and "light"

looks like a pretty old model, can someone pinpoint it?

aren't thinkpads too bulky? I read that an XPS 13 would be a good choice for a laptop

You can't get an XPS 13 for 150 bucks

Attached: it has come to this point.webm (1280x720, 2.61M)

Yeah? No shit man, but I sit there anyway because they can autobid too.

If redditards find out that the elitebooks are good, they're gonna meme them on leddit until prices are high, and you're going to regret shilling them.

WHY ARE QMS SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE I JUST WANT TO UPGRADE MY SHITPAD WHY DO I NEED TO PAY MORE FOR A CPU THAN THE ENTIRE MACHINE IM GOING TO PUT IT INTO

Attached: 157931.jpg (248x408, 14K)

Yeah, I paid $100 for a 3612qm.
I'm probably gonna resell it since I'm too much of a brainlet to know how to flash my t420.

How bout $50, AND a piece of that booty?

I'm in the market for a laptop to replace my late 2013 mbp. I'm doing a lot of really CPU-intensive tasks, so I'm looking for something with either a modern i7 or ideally a Xeon. Linux compatibility, 1080p screen, and at least 8gb of RAM are all musts. The hdd/ssd doesn't matter, I have plenty of spare drives laying around, and I have no need for discrete graphics. I'm fine with refurbished stuff. My budget is $0-$1300. Thanks in advance.

but i get 6 on my X61t 8 cell with windows

Send me a drive and I'll tell you
