I am considering using i3 on my main rig. I watched a lot of people use it an want to give it a try. I will be installing in the lastest Debian version..
What should I know before switching over to i3? Currently using 3 monitor setup. I only use Firefox.
You really dont need to know anything beforehand, just jump in and you will have the basics down in a day or two. The important keybinds are very easy to remember, and can easily be changed in your config file.
This for some reason, the lower resolution part is not necessary. I use i3 on my X220 with 1080 IPS mod and it's very comfy, but for some reason I just can't deal with it on my desktop.

great, thanks, I will never need another tool in my life, this will save a lot of time in the future, again thanks for recommending me the superior tool user-kun

Look at all the poor fags here, i7 is way better.

Yeah, who wouldn't want features that you don't plan to use anyway, you just have to pay the extra cost, carry the extra weight, deal with the inferior quality and durability.

dwm i3 is bloat

I agree. i3 with multiple monitors is not really comfy. Maybe in a desktop with just one really big monitor and some good gap shortcuts, but usually it's better to use some actual DE for multiple monitor setups.

i3 is awesomewm for brainlets
Colton Cox
i3 is awesome, no regrets
Christian Garcia
this you don't need more

I disagree, having workspaces dedicated to each monitor so applications can easily be moved and so I can navigate from each monitor quickly is amazing.

with i3? lol the chad herbstluftwm that has more features and uses half the ram laughts at you virgins

i3 is trash. It has no automatic layouting. It's hardly an improvement from floating-only window managers.
Logan Hill
it also uses an inexcusable amount of resources for the legendary lack of functionality
Dylan Gonzalez
Oh I agree i3 is inferior to other tiling wm but still better than floating wm

>I spent 3 minutes in the keyboard shortcut menu and recreated i3's layout and shortcuts almost 1:1 It's easy to recreate i3's functionality "almost 1:1" when you have never used it so you're actually only recreating the most trivial 20% of it at best.

Read your config file first and look into how to set up common things you might want like a screen locker.
I use it both at work and at home and it's very comfy to use and let's me have a nice workflow.
Ethan Diaz
Thank you.

It's really easy to switch back, if you don't like it, just delete it or change the .xinitrc
Adrian Phillips
After a year of using it I would say it is very functional, and not pretty at all.
Jace Cruz
I agree

it's a shame I cannot run kde plasma and i3 at the same time, to get the best of both worlds
Easton Jones
You can actually, you just have to edit some config files to tell kde to use i3 instead of kwin. Just look on unixporn somebody probably posted directions.
Wyatt Walker
Give a better suggestions than?
I have seen a lot of guidelines how to rice i3!

dwm and xmonad.

Use i3-gaps on my X200 and about to install on my desktop soon.
It's fine. As a translator, my most usual layout is PDF on the left, Vim on the right, Lingea in the scratchpad. It's comfy AF.
given that, as an OP you're a faggot and probably are used to some wangblows-like DE setup - use i3 as a WM inside a lightweight DE such as XFCE or LXDE (not KDE as that shit is kind of too buggy).
Initially it'll look cumbersome to you, lifetime mouse user; 1-2 weeks will pass and you'll start understanding why using a mouse to manage windows is dumb. After a month or two you might start ricing in your free time, a hobby you'll enjoy but abandon in a month or two - internet is full of resources and you'll reach the 95th percentile of comfiness soon enough.
After a year i3 will become one of the major reasons your productivity has improved at least twofold. You'll start developing habits, using named desktops, setting up starting templates and stopping to understand anybody ever who has to do any job that's slightly more complex than sending emails around while using plebeian windows-like floating WMs.
i3wm is simply too fucking good, end of the story. I haven't tried XMonad or bspwm, which claim superiority - but at this point I simply don't care, I can't imagine getting more improvement on my productivity than i3 brought on the table.
Oh, and since you got multiple monitors - don't try awesomeWM; it's kind of cool when you got only one, but for 2 and more it sucks horse dicks.
>It has no automatic layouting the only thing I actually miss from i3wm is the ability to use saved layouts. Like, open up the application X and stick the window X.1 left and make it large 30%, then the window X.2 on the right, etc. That'd be really helpful.
use i3-gaps with polybar for pretty. Loving it so far
just look at these fucking retards comparing a DE to a WM
Zachary Taylor
>just look at these fucking retards comparing a DE to a WM then just use kwin
I3 is a really sleek sharp blade. You need to add the rest of the tools and handle yourself.
Easton Clark
Best post is this one OP -> i3 was one of the few things promoted by Jow Forums that wasn't a meme. This post said it all, I don't know if you're going to use it on your personal or professional computer, but either way it's going to make you a lot more productive, i3 is Godsent. Your brain will pick up the shortcuts in two or three days and you'll find yourself feeling so powerful and even wanting to use those shortcuts on other WM.
