the ui is clunky, but it's as close to "be-all-end-all" music player that android had to offer

You've probably gone through the same and came to the conclusion that no other player offers the same audio engine quality and is as stable and functional as PowerAMP.
Folder view support as well which is the most important feature. If a player doesn't have it, it's instantly trash.
