I have Spotify subscription, still use Groove for the UI. If I want to open a non-local music, I then use open.spotify.com, better than the desktop client.
I believe it should be doable to make an on-demand Spotify deamon to keep the next track to play on a Temp folder, let Groove play from there, that is, if they still provide the API.
