many distros have moved to xz for most use cases, because CPUs are fast enough. time saved on i/o > extra time spent decompressing.

xz is LZMA compression

unrar is gpl licensed.

The 7z plugin for rar is proprietary so it wouldn't make a difference.

xz is a container format that adds some pretty useless headers and padding to lzma

in other words xz uses lzma compression

There is unrar, which is proprietary, and unrar-free, which is GPL but doesn't support all rar archive types. Install unarchiver.

I stick with using zip due to the fact it's standard everywhere and most likely wont go anywhere, ever. Most of the time I don't even use it for compression purposes. I more use it for keeping things bundled for sharing or better interaction with programs (opening albums of song and art). zip, mkv, webm, mp3, png, jpg and wav are just about all the containers anyone could need for media consumption.
