protonmail.com

I've heard about that but what if it shuts down?

Any other alternatives? I don't want to use mail.com either.

It is in Switzerland. You can sue their ass off for free and become a millionaire.

What's wrong with gmail?

ymail

0.1 francs have been added to your account

Nothing, it's the best E-mail provider. It's just the standard Jow Forums paranoid narrative about le ebin botnet etc.

I don't want to use Google products anymore unless it's necessary, like with Android. I've already switched to Startpage (even though it uses Google), and I look forward to the day when there's a real alternative to YouTube.

can confirm this, have used proton free for 3 years now.

Hooktube, if you use firefox you can install an extension that redirects all youtube links to their hooktube counterpart, that way you don't give google more shekels or let them track you

buy a chrome book
it comes with free emails

>"""(((free email)))"""
How they make money then?

the problem with email is far greater than it seems guys.

the problem is that even if you use other email provider, most likely you will be reciving and sending emails to the gmail servers, so if it goes into the google servers even if its from another provider, they wil scan the email.

so what can we do?
well, encripted email with keys ofc!
the problem is that you need to share the keys with the ppl you intend to send emails, not the easiest solution

There is Peertube, a decentralized YouTube alternative:

>won't let you use your own client

literally the whatsapp of email

Email is important enough that you really want to use a company that is going to stand the test of time. A lot of sites that offer free email now might not exist in 10 years, but I can damn well guarantee you that Google will still be there.

What I really want to see is government-run email services. Issue all citizens a virtual ID and email address. Integrate that shit into things like paying taxes or applying for government services. Cut all the red tape and other bullshit, save money, make things easy for everyone, everybody wins. You can always just use a private email address for stuff like porn or hobbies you want to keep private.

Protonmail has paid accounts for people who want more storage, companies, or people who just want to support them. Their paying customers subsidize the ones who don't pay.

Speaking of Protonmail, I have a question: they claim the following here: protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/what-is-encrypted/
>Message Storage
>All messages in your ProtonMail inbox is stored end-to-end encrypted. This means we cannot read any of your messages or hand them over to third parties. This includes messages sent to you by non-ProtonMail users, although keep in mind if an email is sent to you from Gmail, Gmail likely retains a copy of that message as well.

How the hell can they store emails received from a Gmail account for example in a way that they can't read them? Regular emails, without PGP, are sent in clear (apart from TLS). The only thing that comes to my mind is that they encrypt them with your public key at the moment when it's received. But that means you're trusting them to do that and not keep a clear copy elsewhere, and you can't verify that.

Is there something I'm missing?

nop, thats the bad thing about protonmail OR any vpn provider, you need to belive in their word....for email you need to belive that they wont make copies, for vpn you need to belive that they wont save logs...

That's exactly the thing, you will never know for sure, you're not in control of it, they can say whatever they want about how secure their service is while refusing security audits and keeping things under wraps.

What even is end-to-end encryption in this case? In PGP's case it's always user-to-user, in protonmail's case it's most likely mail server-to-mail server. Which means both ends can theoretically process the message contents.

/thread.

public key, moran

No, in Protonmail's case encryption is done on client-side on your browser using OpenPGP.js when you send an email.

How hard is it to switch from gmail to proton mail?

>closes your account based on circumstantial speculation
no

1 rupee has been deposited in your account

Gmail is the best email for your average users. In fact it, along with Google News and Youtube and Search, are the only good things to come out of Google Inc

>Youtube
>implying they didn't buy it just to inject ads, delete "problematic" videos, and harvest user data

Cock.li for shit posting email, and general personal email & tutanota for encrypted email service

Prontonmail shut down Andrew anglins account because muh racism. >Inb4 non-whites on g say good fuck racists, go back to basedddit

Very easy, I did it with no problem. Their VPN service is also great.

2 shekels have been deposited into your account

>free
>500mb
>150 messages a day

This exactly why people are still using gmail

Same person. Oh right, I keep forgetting they purchased it from another company

cockli
also
>paying for basic email services

They're a private company, they can deny service when they see fit. A true libertarian would have no issue with this.

ynotmail

This.

the minimum answer is to use some normie shit because it will handle the volume, security, etc. and remain around

the mid-way is to buy your own domain and host it somewhere. then if the email provider goes tits up, if you've synced the email offline, you didn't really lose anything. just point it towards a new mail server

hosting your own email is great but uptime is a challenge plus securing it adequately, you're less of a target for foreign nations but more of a target for everyone else scanning vulnerable systems

Cock.li all the fucking way

What's your solution then? I'm genuinely curious because I'm looking for an alternative as well. Something other than hurrrr host your own

Does this work with IMAP clients like Thunderbird yet?

own domain + centos and iredmail

yes, they have made a bridge, but its only available for paid users.

also you kinda need to trust that the bridge is safe...

Protonmail it's worse than WhatsApp on technical stuff, but at least they're based in Switzerland and not in the US

The fact that I might list my account over whatever whims Protonmail people will have it's quite aggravating, has Tutanota done the same?

I host my own solution at my home
surprisingly my ISP doesn't prevent services from running on default mail ports so it all works fine.

You fucking brainlet.

Google can read your emails and serve you ads based on their content
Also, its not encrypted

>What I really want to see is government-run email services.
>Issue all citizens a virtual ID and email address.
I'm not sure I'd trust the tech iliterates at the gubermint to handle email seucrity

Do you guys pay for protonmail?
150 emails a day and 500mb seems like it could bottle neck you on a busy day.

>imagine being such a poorfag you can't even afford 5 bucks a month

Attached: pricing.png (1370x622, 46K)

nice trips

I'm just not currently paying for it because I don't have access to a credit card at the moment, but I would prefer to have at least a plus account

>$5 a month
> 5 gigs storage
>1000 messages

>gmail
>free 16 gigs
>unlimited messages

Yea, it's no wonder people are using gmail.

>gmail
>google can read your emails
>sells you ads based on their content
>is not e2e encypted
>gubirmint can access it

Email isn't just about storage, but many normies are too dumb to even care about this

>>gubirmint can access it
This is an unavoidable fact of life. The US government considers any online service with strict privacy policies to be pro-terrorism.

>This is an unavoidable fact of life.
No it's not, encryption does exactly that, it prevents not only the gubirnmint but also anyone else to protect their shit
This mindset that only criminals have "something to hide" is dumb and will only let us to a dystopia

lol only 5gb storage and 1000 email cap sent per day

cheap cunts

for 5 bucks, it is indeed cheap, bu still worth it, in my opinion

Encryption is just an excuse to beat an answer out of someone. International politics are a scary, dangerous mess and most companies don't want to deal with that.
>This mindset that only criminals have "something to hide" is dumb and will only let us to a dystopia
It's a dystopia we are rapidly heading toward. It can be fought, but not with market competition.

>It can be fought, but not with market competition.
why not with market competition?

lol gmail is not the best free email provider.

Because world powers do not recognize the right to privacy, so such a market cannot truly exist. It's a political issue that has no technological solution.

I beg to differ.
Although I do agree that the biggest companies do not care about pricay right now, it is becoming a more and more mainstream issue, and it can have both political and technologial solutions, just look at the GDPR
I refuse to simply let it happen and have my right to privacy completed eroded, the last thing I want in to live in a society like this theverge.com/2018/5/17/17344250/google-x-selfish-ledger-video-data-privacy

wired.co.uk/article/chinese-government-social-credit-score-privacy-invasion

For the last time it's fucking illegal in Switzerland and they don't keep the accounts of known criminals.

building your own email server on a $10 or less VPS. You might actually learn something as well.

>won't let you set up pgp
you can't paste a pgp encrypted message into your email?

mail.yandex.com

>What's a better free alternative to Goymail?
Authorities are informed. We will get you, OP.

None. Just stop trying dude

So you are telling me I need to go to their website to check for new mail? WTF?

Thanks, dodged the bullet. Deleting accounts after 3 months of inactivity is a fucking joke.

Gmails UI is shit. I forward everything from Gmail to my Hotmail

Bitchute is the true alternative to YouTube.

You can set up your own god damn email server, you know?

What's the best mail server software? I'm used to MS Exchange at work, but don't know if it's easy to pirate that shit. I'm currently using GoySuite with all my domains on a free licence, but tired of Google's Jewing.

I use yandex.

>free
Freedom isn't free you fucking faggot; pony up the cash for proper, paid mail or host your own

In that case, being floss doesn't mean anything, since the code is running in their servers. You can't know that you're running the same code that's on Github unless you verify it every time you log in. It's also trivial to send a compromised version to target a specific user if they wish to do so.

Yes for simple disposable mails for forum registrations.

You could host your own email too.

PGP is compromised

Also email itself is inherently insecure

Daily reminder that lavabit is botnet now.

>This thread is still going

Don't really want to open myself up to hacking.
I'll let the pros handle that.

Why is email like this? Surely there must be a better alternative? Why can't we just send stuff directly and keep them locally like with texts, or better yet, messaging apps?

There are no fucking alternatives. Just embrace the botnet, there's no other way at this point.

Self hosted is the best way to go about it. Not even that hard or expensive at this point.

Tutanota (Primary)
Yandex.mail
Cock.li

the problem is not sending the message, the problem is making sure that no one else can read it but you and the destinatary.

also check

What about Signal, for example? Why can't people switch to something like that? Imagine if Signal didn't use phone numbers, but used usernames like email instead, but I guess there could be a problem with spam.

still need the recipients to use it

After seeing that video from The Verge about Google, I think I'm going to give ProtonMail a try. Still not sure what to do about Android, though.
