You know, I realize Terry Davis is a meme but I think he's unironically someone to be admired.

Yes, he is obviously mentally ill and the OS he built is primitive relative to modern offerings. But he's someone who understands how to produce a piece of software from first principals, which is a demographic that's nearly non-existent in 2018. Even if you've built a toy OS for fun or as part of a project you probably wrote a profoundly limited system that didn't even have a compiler where you just linked all your code into the kernel. Getting that far already means you understand computers better the majority of programmers, but miles away from what Davis has done. If you were a shining star in your class or just really took to OS design maybe you wrote a janky-as-hell filesystem and minimal compiler and implemented a subset POSIX. You couldn't compile any large software packages with it of course but you could write new software without rebooting for the most part. You might also have been able to write a graphics stack, again, if you're damn smart and/or determined. But in either case you almost certainly worked in a team or scavenged some code for it. Unless you a truly rare programmer you can't do and understand both those things bottom to top, they're vastly different, and both hugely involved. Terry managed to do both though. He is probably one of the greatest programmers of all time, even if what he invested his amazing talents in was a wildly overly ambitions of building an OS as a temple to the voices in his head or whatever.

I wouldn't want Davis' life, but I can't deny that what he's a accomplished is a technical marvel that I wouldn't have thought that was possible from one person if I hadn't seen it.

I've been fascinated and periodically following Terry for around 11-12 years now since I first discovered him, and I've witnessed a man that has his brain completely fried by schizophrenia steadily decline into the abyss. It's really, really sad, and I'm actually quite angry with how the American mental health care system appears to be completely lacking and how he has gotten zero help except for his parents and massive drug prescriptions that really fuck his mind up (in many ways more than the schizophrenia itself).

Many here blame his parents for kicking him out, but I actually do not blame them. They've struggled hard and had to put up with stuff that is way too much to be expected from any normal person, in addition to Terry actually wanting to leave himself.

It's just a complete tragedy and an sad reminder of how utterly shit the American health care system really is.

This is why you should sleep for 6-10 hours during the day once every 2 days. I'm not kidding, I have trained myself to live a 48-h cycle with 6-10 hrs of sleep during daytime. 6-10 might seem like a big deviation, but that's because I also stay awake far longer than average. The first 20 hours of being awake I spend doing freelance work or whatever to make money, the next 10 hours I try to spend outside, hanging out or trying to find work and the last 10-12hrs I usually spend at home, because that's when I am tired.

Doctors just sedate the patients with the antipsychotics to the point their brain is so fogged up they can't form any crazy thoughts, but also no constructive thoughts making them into zombified vegetables.
