/otg/ - Old Tech General

Who old tech here? I've been using a Smith Corona PWP 6000 Plus typewriter from 1993 to type out important papers without distraction
I'm liking the linear switches, though I think the neighbours want to kill me when I hit print. Still gotta see if the floppy drive works

Post some of the oldest tech you have that you still use here

Here's what it sounds like when printing

I fixed up an IBM Selectric 2 I got for free.
It works almost perfectly but I can't get the correction ribbon to work

Attached: IMG_2186.webm (1920x1080, 1.7M)

Is there a trick to getting it working? I can't get correction tape working properly in my machine as well.

idk I can't find anywhere that it's jamming.
I thought about asking the YT channel 'Phoenix Typewriters' but I've bothered him enough on an Selectric 3

Guess I'll have to harass them too

i had sexual relations with a zip drive
i miss her

I still use this old P70, even though it's slow and cumbersome

That's incredible

Can you type a "You're a fag" too?

Man these word processors feels like piece of technology ripped straight from alternative timeline.

That guy sucks. I discovered him last month and although he has a video where he perfectly describes a problem I'm having with my Brother machine (where the type hammer doesn't move), he only says that he can work with the person who sent him the typewriter over email to work something out or some shit like that. Why can't he tell us how to do it like the other ones? Also I have another Brother SX 4000 where it has no power. Like you plug it in and nothing happens.

Pfft. Isn't that the keyboard that Chyrosran said was pretty much the worst piece of shit he's ever used?

Literally who?

You can replace the floppy drive with a Gotek, although word processors often do really weird things with the interface.

You just reminded me of why the medical profession never appealed to me in the least.

Where do I buy soviet computers?

from the former USSR, you can find some on eBay

Dude psychiatry is best field, especially in a hospital where you get to meet all sorts of fucked up people
Surgery on the other hand is boring as fuck, it's nothing like what shows like Grey's Anatomy make it out to be

Where do you guys get your old tech? Ebay?

craigslist would be a better place, specifically old boomers

eBay only if prices aren't over inflated. You can check out garage sales to

This boomer maymay is getting stale.

>Surgery on the other hand is boring as fuck, it's nothing like what shows like Grey's Anatomy make it out to be

>spending 30 years of your life putting stents in old guys' heart vessels
I'll pass.

well in this case it's true tho. you can find tons of vintage electronics from older people

>redshift before redshift

I found a guy selling tons of old computers and tech for cheap out of his basement back when I was in highschool. He had a train set to, what a cool guy

>from 1993
That thing is clearly late 80s. According to a quick Google search, from 1988.

...

i keep this lil CRT around -B&W, AV input, but handy for when i need something to hook up to standard def items, like my retropie etc

Maybe they were made for 5 years?

i've had this old girl since i was in high school in the early 90s, and took it back from my folk's shed when i was home for a recent visit. im gonna try and source a new ribbon or reink the one it's got, and then go through and see what may need some graphite lube etc.

Attached: IMG_20171105_164337[1].jpg (2448x3264, 2.54M)

>and source a new ribbon or reink the one it's got

Could make a new one yourself too; either get some woven fabric or Mylar and ink it.

Time to try that erasing function.

There any difference in particular?

Mylar ribbons make a crisper image, but they don't last as long as cloth ones. However it may be hard to find woven fabric of the right consistency for a typewriter ribbon.

The rise of computers in the 80s ruined Smith-Corona's typewriter business so they tried to adapt for a while with "smart" word processors which were basically a single-purpose computer, but they finally went bankrupt and reorganized as a producer of thermal ribbons and packaging labels.

I still use a Northwood core non-HT P4 machine on a daily basis. It's my DAW. Would that count as "old tech"? Myabe the Firewire audio interface connected to it?

They should have just made computers

Bank Street Writer on the Apple ][ pretty much ruined typewriters and standalone word processors for me. ST Writer on my old 520ST pretty much sealed it.

I saw an ad for one of them once that went something like "Want to type documents, but don't want the hassle of setting up and running a computer? Smith-Corona has the answer."

That's a really poor way to advertise something. It's pretty much saying "Our products are for people too dumb to be able to use a computer."

They were trying to copy Apple's strategy for the Mac

or just want a stand-alone word processor. Back in the day, these were fairly decent, good for offices with typing pools, administrative, and all that. Many that had disk drives used formats compatible with WordStar, WordPerfect, and Word, as well as TXT, so you could go back and forth between a computer and one of these

OP here. Whenever I open the calendar it defaults to June 1993, so I'm assuming that's when it was made

>ebay stuff is stratospherically priced
>craigslist has nothing older than C2Ds
>thrift stores don't even sell computers, they send any that they receive for recycling
>the hicks in my town never have any tech of any kind at garage sales, just clothes and shit that their kids grew out of

Attached: 1476222600076.jpg (1280x720, 82K)

move to the east cost then, all the bug tech centers where in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts before silicone valley took them all

Your a fag*

nytimes.com/1990/01/16/science/personal-computers-smart-typewriter-may-be-an-intelligent-choice.html

I guess once Internet porn happened, then there was no reason anymore to have a typewriter over a PC.

are there any typewriters that can be used as a printer via a serial port or something? or was there no in-between from typewriters to dot matrix printers?

Does software count? Because I use nroff to write textfiles.

gonna have to ask you to think about how a typewriter works for 30 seconds and realize how retarded what you just said is.

See

the OP literally posted a typewriter that prints automatically, but it only has a floppy drive input. the difference I'm referring to is that a typewriter has a type wheel and a dot matrix has, well, a dot matrix

Last time I re-ribboned my typewriter I just looked for a ribbon the correct width at office-max and transferred it to the old spool.

Pic not mine, but the same model.

These things were usually based around a generic Z80 architecture or something to that effect.

Could a Z80 even manage an 80 column display?

that looks like the same model that was used just before the computer became simple enough to normies to use so around 1980's there was quite a few don;t know when they where made at having a guess it probably was much earlier than that era

A modified Z80 powered the Gameboy Advance

This is a trick question, right?

So says the millions of CP/M boxes with 80 column displays.

It was a co-processor for sound and backwards compatibility in the GBA
A modified 8080 with Z80 instructions was used in the GB and GBC

Your

Found the newfag

Im looking for some suggestions, moving to a remote location soon, want to get a computer that can do basic audio and graphics, but can program the baremetal. Would need to be able to print off all reference manuals for the ISA and platform etc before I go. Something like an Amiga , but would prefer something newer as I don't really want to deal with floppies, but will if I have to

Literally why?

>old tech
>general
Why can't we have nice retro threads anymore? Nowadays they have to be shitty generals full of shitposts.

Your post is the first shitpost in the thread. Why does a single word trigger you?

Comfy feels

>responded with a shitpost

I have an amber slow scan monitor, and it’s the easiest on the eyes of any monitor I own.

>Why can't we have nice retro threads anymore?
We have them, they just don't live more than a few hours. It's the same thing that happens to all the interesting thread. Intel vs. AMD #333 is more important.

Same. I have an old 11" amber CRT and it's so easy on the eyes to look at.

tfw you switch on your computer with a satisfying "Thunk"

Found your problem.

I'm not from the "land fo liberty", unfortunately.

End yourself, hipster.

No U

This is the very subhuman vermin who watch a Youtube celebrity do a video about an old computer and go kewl I want one of those so aesthetic XD. They have no interest in the history or technology or programming or anything, just that they think it gives them hipster cred.

Whats your problem m8y?

Anyone miss when "hipster" wasn't used as a synonym for "person I don't like"?

It has a spell checker
