What is the best "leave it and forget it" antivirus for an 8 year old PC running Windows 7 for my parents?

What is the best "leave it and forget it" antivirus for an 8 year old PC running Windows 7 for my parents?

I don't want it to be free, willing to pay $30 a year.

And don't say common sense 2018, my dad has none with the shit he visits.

stop using limewire

Install Win10 and let the botnet take care of it by auto updating windows defender with real time protection.

I use Win10 LTSB on a 11 year old laptop with a low voltage mobile core 2 duo and 3gb of memory, runs fine with an SSD.

Do they really need Windows though?

Debian stable with that auto-updater thing turned on. Your dad will get himself on dozens of horse porn mailing lists but he won't get malware.

Kaspersky and don't let them have admin rights. You will 100% still be getting phone calls from them but it's because you never call anymore you shmuck.

Eset by nod32 is $40/year

From a mate who's making far more than I ever will working computer security, if you're sure that they visit normal sites, get updated to Windows 10 and get Windows Defender working. It's pretty solid AV for that sense.

If you're 100% sure that there's going to be endless horse cock and lolitas on the screen when your dad uses it, Bitdefender's a good choice for some more intense protection. Mate said it's the only thing that passed a bunch of tests they run at his place.

If they honestly need Windows, then don't bother with Windows 7. There is no true "set it and forget it" for Windows 7. The old Windows Defender on there is garbage and stuff like what is in the OP will bog the system down a decent bit and constantly bug you with shit.

Here's what you do instead:
Install Windows 10. Really. The newer Windows Defender is pretty much as good as any other antivirus these days. It works in the background and doesn't really consume much in the way of resources. It also rarely bothers you with any type of notification. It's really the best "set it and forget it" option out there right now imo.
Combine the newer Windows Defender with a limited user account and uBlock Origin and your parents won't have any problems. Just ensure that they don't know the password to the admin account so they can't install some stupid shit.

If you can get away with not using Windows, then I'd say go for Ubuntu instead. Don't tell them the sudo password and you'll be golden. Literally nothing stupid they could do there.

How about you just install him Ubuntu or Linux Mint and just forget about

A. Botnet
B. Viruses

ESET is a Jow Forums favourite, and I think it's still easily grabbed for free from whatever that site was. MBAM is always reliable too, but it's gotten harder to grab for free. MSE is always reliable.

The "I can't answer OP's question but I still want people to hear my dumb opinion" answers.
Great job, everyone.

lmao
you can't even ducking read, you just decided to reply to all of them and assume that they're all similar answers

>Don't tell them the sudo password and you'll be golden.
How are they supposed to get updates?

Doesn't *buntu use an auto updater now?

Attached: file.png (495x216, 13K)

still needs sudo for confirmation

Avast or bitdefender.

Linux or anything OSS

You can limit the right to a few commands.

>What is the best "leave it and forget it"-
None. Updates (not only AV updates) are actually way more important than an antivirus in regards to safety. There's no such thing as a "leave and forget" alternative.

>Don't tell them the sudo password and you'll be golden.
The sudo password doesn't mean shit if the account isn't on the sudoers list in the first place. The way you said it is implying that for some reason you added them to the sudoers list (otherwise the password wouldn't make a difference), but then ultimately mean to prevent them from using sudo. As this is an inherent contradiction, my conclusion is that you don't actually know shit about GNU/Linux. Stop giving advise about stuff you don't know.

Agreed with these anons, I haven't had AV in years but the last time I used it I had ESET NOD32, it's definitely one of the best for not bothering you unless it's urgent.

you can use microsoft essential (mse) it's great antivirus. as you said, leave it and forget it.

Antivirus for normies is pretty fucking useless they still end up some weird sites with ton of stupid shits. It also bogs even a powerful computer down to a crawl, don't expect your dads shitty computer to run smoothly.

I would suggest you setup PiHole, it blocks a fuck ton of ads and not only that, it also blocks DNS request to a malicious sites.

Security? Set it in the firewall!

webroot. Everyone likes to ignore it but it's by far the most lightweight AV, typically using only about 1-5MB of RAM and virtually insignificant processor usage.

>t. high and mighty freetard

Here's your (You), idiot.
Nice bait.

seconding webroot, it just doesn't get in the way, light as fuck
however
if your dad likes to download strange github binaries, make sure his boot drive has plenty of storage left

Just use security essentials if you're still stuck with windows 7. It's probably the least intrusive antivirus I've used so far. Also, make sure they're running an ad-blocker.

install gentoo

moron
They aren't wrong.

ublock origin
the default one provided by windows should be enough
or clamav if you insist to have an antimalware

much better if you install gentoo

>for my parents
fuck off i always see this when a retard needs help
>willing to pay $30 a year
i bet mommy gave you $50 and pocket the money left kiddo

Zone Alarm

Just don't forget to put a password on it and log off when its in the background.

I've been using Malwarebytes for years. I liked it so much I actually bought it.

MBAM is good but instaling linux and not needing one is better

Ublock/adblock in every single browser. Don't install adobe reader or adobe flash. Don't install antivirus, waste of time.

uBlock Origin + firewall
Don't use flash player, don't install (((cracked software))), install only open source software

nod32

Get a parental site blocker and only allow the dumb fuck to visit safe ones

Gentoo.

malwarebytes paid, they have realtime protection and scheduled scans on their paid version, updates every day or so and before scanning and is pretty good as it picks up most things avg wont as it's updated often and it's seriously light weight with no shitty adware built in (avg), the realtime protection also protects you from those shitty sites that use your machine for bit coin mining while your browsing them

cant believe how distanced from actual reality some virgins are dude.
no wonder you're lonely, you wil die abandoned in some funky shithole and forgotten like the obese weirdo you are.

Set up the application whitelist. He DOESN'T need any new applications.

Bitdefender Free.

Just install Windows 10 with autoupdates enabled. Defender was found to be better than any anti-virus. Don't forget 7 only has a lifespan of 2 more years making it unsuitable for a "leave it and forget it" computer.

the only acceptable answer
Consider this, OP:
1) mse won't mess with things it shouldn't mess with, like browser encryption or content
2) best cost-effectiveness, because commercial av-engines are not that much better
3) if your father is a retard he will get malware anyway

>the "i got baited but realized too late, i'll just pretend that i knew all along!" the response

deep freeze might be a good choice, not antivirus but solid option for "leave and forget." just remember to disable it before make changes to system

avast is the best free option

This, unironically

G Data is perfect, I have it for years

MSE and Immunet are great at being silent anti-viruses.

Kaspersky is my personal recommendation, because it does the job and does well, but keep in mind it does a side work as a russian spyware. Remember to turn off HTTPS port scanning.

install gentoo

this, just install ublock origin to hide fake links

common sense.
