Why do you use Linux?
What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?

it werks
windows 8
arch 32. since arch dropped 32bit support. using gnu plus linux since windows 8 release dunno how many years 6-8 maybe

Because windows is an unstable bug ridden steaming pile of horseshit that breaks at every single minor update on tuesday. The only time I'd use windows is in a VM, and that is very rare. I use Linux in both workstation and home PC. There's nothing to it.

i really wish i could move to linux but i dont want to leave visual studio (.net course in school) and photoshop. an yideas?

Someone on the internet told me it was best the platform to program C/C++ on. Since I didn't want to pay for Visual Studio, I downloaded Ubuntu.

How can it work if you can't do any work on it?
I mean literally there's no useful software for it.

Microshit VS Code is free you fucking faggot and runs on linux.
kill you're self's

Wow no need to be rude.

When I downloaded Ubuntu, I didn't know about that program.

Depends on what you use it for.

I like the idea of a system I have full control over. However I have this Windows hybrid laptop that can't even run Linux because it has a 32 bit UEFI. Doesn't matter what distro or .efi files I load. Pain in the ass

Microsoft doesn't make ubuntu you fucking retard.
But both are geared towards niggers.

>I mean literally there's no useful software for it.
Qt Creator, CMake, GDB and GCC works fine and pays my bill. That's all I care about.

Gentoo because ProAudio

Is your laptop 64 bit? Have you checked with your manufacturer to see if you can update your UEFI/BIOS?

Yeah it's 64 bit. I haven't updated the BIOS but I don't want to experiment since it's my school laptop. Besides, even people who have somehow made Linux work in this model say half of the shit doesn't work, like sound or WiFi.

>Why do you use Linux?
Because I can't stand software that tries to be my master rather than my servant.

>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
I don't really remember. It was long ago.

>What distribution are you running as your main
Debian.

>and why
It does what I want with no fuss, very reliably. Of all the distros out there, it's the one I most (though not perfectly) trust to do by default what I would have wanted anyway.

>and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Hm. 13 years, I think?

>Microsoft doesn't make ubuntu
Was this ever in contention?

Too bad man.

microsoft windows is "proprietary" closed-source software. there is no way to know (beyond a shadow of a doubt) what is really happening in your computer (or on anyone elses for that matter)

>Why do you use Linux?
Because it is good kernel, that gave me ZERO problems in 5 years, unlike NT or MS-DOS.
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
No forced update bullshit, and better hardware support.
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Have been running Xubuntu for a long period of time, but now I run OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, since I was tired of APT shitting itself and not updating WiFi drivers with new kernel release.

to answer your third question i am using openbsd ATM

I dropped Windows after god awful experiences with the shitty updates. CPUs running hot because the fucking background processes are doing god knows what. Had a problem where it would get stuck on looking for updates, couldn't find a fix so upgraded from 7 to 10 and that didn't fucking work, had to find a blog post talking about some horrid pack that finally fixed it, though even in a normal state the updating is trash. If I booted up my windows laptop I just know after logging in the CPU will be ramping up for the windows modules installer process or some shit, but boot up the Linux laptop and it runs solid. I can upgrade packages in a few seconds, there's no pajeet helper software getting in the way of everything and I have control over things like workspaces, desktop managers, etc.

>Why do you use Linux?
It's a lot more comfy, the DEs usually has a lot more of customization so i can make it feel like in home, it's basically maintenance-free thanks to the package managers and it has been pretty stable for me, although of course there's season when i feel like testing bleeding edge software but for most of my activities i use long time support releases.

>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
Not really a freetard but as other mention the terms of usage of the OS itself are much nicer than windows or mac and there's no restrictions or forced crap, recently got a new computer with w10 and the forced updates system has been a pain in the balls, i'm thinking on installing w7 or the ltsb but at the moment i prefere to not touch my setup because i'm obligated to work with it anyway, maybe later.

>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
KDE neon, although as i mention back then plasma was pretty buggy and i tolerated it i used xubuntu LTS as my main driver, some time later plasma became very good and i've been using it as my main OS since around 5.8.

>i dont want to leave visual studio (.net course in school)
I'm in a similar situation as you, although there's monodevelop and gtksharp i would recommend you to use a VM for that in particular, so you'll not have any problem, for your own proyect i recommend you to check Qt, it has very good multi-platform support.

>photoshop
You can run it on wine if you fiddle a bit, there's instructions on youtube about how to set up the wine bottle to make it work. A big advantage is that wine bottles are portable so you can zip them and you'll not need to set them up never again, it makes everything on it portable so you'l not have problems even with the registry crap you get on windows. If you wat a native solution there's gimp, krita and inkscape which are pretty good, gimp improved a lot lately.

Wow, some nice microsoft facts there dude, take some pasta:

there seems to be a gigantic faggot who thinks slapping DEPRECATED onto everything is hip and cool. I want to choke that faggot on a dick

>Why do you use Linux?
Because I like it
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
Absolutely hate windows 10, and have had problems with wifi drivers (on multiple computers) since 8 that I don't get in Linux
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
For around a year, whatever flavor of Ubuntu i'm in the mood for. Tried Void a month ago for more up to date packages and I like it, haven't installed it on my main machine yet though.

>Why do you use Linux?
Because it works for web browsing and spreadsheets without BSODs and forced updates.

>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
Your constant shilling.

>Why do you use linux?
I love the customizability and choices I have with it and also repositories
>What made you drop windows?
when it upgraded to windows 10 without my permission. also switched when I discovered it spies on me 24/7
>what are you running?
Fedora with gnome. I tried almost every single desktop environment and I like gnome the most but I did have a short stage of DE hopping because Jow Forums is relentless when it comes to gnome hate. I eventually stopped giving a fuck about what Jow Forums thinks and started to enjoy it

>only computers at home are a smartphone and a compute-stick with bt keyboard
>phone runs android so linux by default
>stick came with windows but didn't have the storage space to update
>so I had to switch to a smaller OS, linux was obviously the first choice
Just works.

>Why do you use Linux?
fast, customizable, not bloated, doesn't spy on you, freedom, etc. etc.
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
tried gnu linux once, dropped windows the second it booted
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
right now I'm running Manjaro, which I just recently hopped to and it's my favorite distro so far

Attached: cringe.png (1440x1033, 1.37M)

Why do you use Mac?
What made you drop being straight for good retards of /v/?
How many MacBooks have self destructed in your ownership and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?

NSA thread but whatever.
>Why do you use Linux?
Because Windows is fucking shit and physically painful to use
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
I'm not really a freetard, but GIMP and KRITA are on GNU/Linux so I can do artshit, and all the games I play are on GNU/Linux
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Slackware, and a good bit over 4 years now. I don't plan to change anytime soon. It's stable as fuck and really comfy. I never have to deal with computer troubles, and I can come home after a long day and do the things I need to do on it.
THis is ocming form an artfag perspective, but Photoshop for art is a gay meme, and there are better programs out there tailored for painting like Paint Tool Sai and Corel on Windows, and Krita on GNU/Linux.

Attached: the_notorious_sam_hyde.png (1060x1278, 1.22M)

Every update would reset a bunch of my shit.
Windows 10.
Debian stretch, year and a half, considering moving to slackware or the main meme itself. I don't like how fussy Debian gets when I try to install something that isn't a prepackaged .deb file or not in the same repo as the distro I'm running. Backports are hacky as shit.

Developing C/++ on Windows is a literal fucking nightmare

>I don't like how fussy Debian gets when I try to install something that isn't a prepackaged .deb file or not in the same repo as the distro I'm running. Backports are hacky as shit.
That's the main reason I switched from Debian to Slackware years ago. Debian's package management bullshit is a drag.

VS code is not visual studio you autistic sperglord

You use linux.
Everyone use linux.
The penguin is unavoidable now, with the desktop PC being the only safe haven from it.

Wow, some big names using Linux, now I want to uninstall because it's not my secret club anymore.

>Why do you use Linux?
Better drivers and software in general.
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
Windows had limited drivers and it was slow and infested with proprietary shit.
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Gentoo.
14 years.

Also its depreciated not deprecated.

Bank machines use BSD, 45.3% of phones in US run BSD, McDonald's fucking drink machine runs BSD, 66.63% of Tablets in the US run BSD, Nintendo Switch/WiiU runs on BSD, most embedded systems run a version of BSD, Linux isn't as popular as you might think, BSD is still king.

I didn't like the bloated feeling of Windows 10 on my laptop. I don't play games on it and it's strictly for school and productive activities. I'm running Linux Mint because it gives an XP/7 vibe.

I tried unbutu and mint and discovered that linux shills are getting paid too much to lie.

It's deprecated. Stop using depreciated.

well I find linux is the best system to hack with so I always need the command prompt at hand

i like fixing broken shit all day every day

I don't
;^)

>ITT
>MS (butthurt) data mining

>Why do you use Linux?
At this point it's honestly mostly a habit and being comfortable with what I know. I haven't used Windows since 1998. I know it's improved since then but every time I see someone using it I get the impression it's still severely limited.

I recently tested Deepin and didn't liked it, now I'm back with Windows, for the compatibility

Microsoft locked me out of my MS live account meaning I literally could not log onto my own hardware. Was going to take a month for them to reset the password.

Have been using Manjaro for 18 months now and regret nothing

When will people learn that linux is a kernel?

>use windows operating systems your whole life
>recently fall for linux meme as you don't want to use windows 10 with spying in the future
>install mint xfce and try to use it for 1 month
>tfw nothing works and everything breaks randomly
>have to spend 2 hours everyday on googling terminal commands to fix various shits
>tfw drivers for my asus xonar dx soundcard don't work
>spend another 2 hours trying to fix the drivers
>tfw sound quality is way worse than it was on windows 7
>realize that linux drivers are bugged and freetards don't care about sound quality on their laptop speakers so they aren't gonna fix them
>go back to windows 7 with frustration

>Why do you use Linux?
It's easier to do most things.
i3 is too good not to use it.

>What distribution are you running as your main
Debian, it just werks.

If you want to sorry out, then at least sorry out over a mistake that was actually made retard.

In 2019, the year of the linux desktop.

Matlab/octave and a Tex compiler is all I need for University.

Multiple of my professors exclusively run Linux, so if they can do it I should also be able to do it.

Well, it works, it has better DE/WM system, it does not force me to update and it fucking shuts down if I close the laptop lid when it does.

Not sure why anyone would drop Windows for linux, but I dropped Windows for bsd.

>Linux is a kernel
Linux distribution is an OS. Linux for short. Stop sperging out about a name.

I was actually using Windows 10 (dualbooting) up to a few days ago. I was updating my nVidia driver and the system just shut off mid installation and I was unable to boot into Windows and i was unable to repair the system. I became so angry I decided to just delete my Windows partition and switch to Linux entirely.

enjoy no games, fags

Linux is like vegeta.
There's the planet, the father and the son.

hmm yes indeed
well done

>Why do you use Linux?
because it's works better than any other OS, for me.
What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
>Windows is slow on my computer.
What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Kubuntu.
a year.

where can I get this deprecated stamp?

I FUCKING HATE VIDEO GAMES

most of them's pure pupu
but some are very much worth playing

Attached: updated muh kernel.jpg (800x420, 72K)

No idea why you connect freetards with linux. Linux is nonfree software containing proprietary blobs.

t.bh

Attached: 1517006795085.jpg (688x1434, 234K)

Visual novels aren't video games :^)

Linux got updates right.

Linux is a kernel.

Don't spend the energy being upset man

>Why do you use Linux?
GNU+Linux*
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
Windows 8-8.1 tempted me but Windows 10 did it
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
UbungĂș but I'll probably move away since I can't stand gnome anymore holy shit

Attached: b5f8d307fb220ea03bcabdb8d7f14547.png (587x700, 166K)

2 years with ubungĂș.
I forgot to mention it.

>Why do you use Linux?
Initially to prolong the useful life of an obsolete laptop, stuck with it because it was more relevant to my interests than Windows
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
I haven't dropped it entirely. I dual boot Windows for the occasional bit of software I can't get running properly in Linux
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Debian Sid. Switched from Stable when I bought a new laptop about a year ago.

I use linux because I was tired of windows on the same hardware taking significantly longer to do same tasks. Windows 10 was the main switch for me when dual booting no longer seemed worth it. I've been using gentoo as primary desktop OS on gaming PC for a few years. These days even stuff like gta 5, fallout 4, overwatch, witcher 3, are all playable with linux. Still not every game works but I already have more shit than I'll ever play in my lifetime.

freedom beer
didn't want to come back after trying osx, didn't want to buy another mac either
gentoo
4 days with gentoo, a bit more than a year with linux

Freedom is like a fresh air.
I dualbooted until 10, which is fucking mess that is not able to work.
Really, linux is more worthy to do shit than 10.
openPEPE since 12.2

Windows 10

I have a 10 year old Asus with linux and a modern gaming laptop with Windows
Linux worked every time I turned it on
Windows would have issues now and again I had to google on linux

And I can't afford a Mac

Windows 10 for school
And mostly Kali or Ubuntu, I distro hop sometimes to see more of linux

>Why do you use Linux?
Because I find it better than Windows and MacOS.
>What made you drop Windows for good freetards of Jow Forums?
I actually started with dual boot but I've never logged on Windows since then so I removed it.
>What distribution are you running as your main and why and how many years have you stuck and rolled with it?
Gentoo. A year and a half.

by "useful software" you mean those anime porn games? Tru, not many work out of the box on linux. But you can always use wine.

>pic
Why people post anime pics on a technology board?, that's cute btw, I love yuru camp,

I never used anything but windows, I liked Windows XP on my childhood, and I'm using Windows 7 right now, and I use mega to sync my files, recently I tested Deepin(15.5), and synced my files with mega in my second partition, and Windows 7 couldn't get the music files, so I tried two programs to read ext4 in windows but failed, then I formatted the partition and windows 7 couldn't start, so I formatted the first partition and installed windows again, so I'll stick with windows.

Has all what I need.

I got a Mandrake CD in a magazine 15 years ago with a lot of packages, found that my old PII runned much faster than crappy unstable XP

Arch and some embedded distros I had made based on LFS.

>How can it work if you can't do any work on it?

the only people who claims this are MS Office level retards, almost ALL embedded, networking and programming jobs are done in GNU/Linux

you forgot ngspice, its a nice spice.

btw www.davidgis.fr/blog/index.php?2017/05/17/1191-honey-select-on-linux-wine-28-gallium-nine

>Why do you use Linux?
Because it's so superior to Windows it's not even funny.

>using linux now that you can install ubuntu on windows 10 from the microsoft store
lmao

M$ gonna end replacing windows by Linux, they are now paying a lot of attention to CLI because they found the only retards who uses GUIs are M$ office brainlets. Now they are encouraging powershell over remote desktops and dotnet build systems features are released first on CLI than VS.

>M$ gonna end replacing windows by Linux
Nooo, my windows, my guis/uis... nevermind, I can just use Windows 7 forever.

Control over your system.
Windows 7
MXlinux since 17.1 version, before that I was distrohoping.

>Why people post anime pics on a technology board?
anime website

This. Windows with Ubuntu subsystem has everything I need. Use linux for gcc, cmake, vim... use Windows for anything that doesn't play nice with linux. Best of both worlds without a reboot or a vm.

I will follow you till you die. You're not welcome here.

It's comfy as fuck and works well on my laptop
Windows 8
Fedora, for five years now. I like GNOME and RPM/DNF/YUM, everything works reasonably well, and everything is free as in freedom except the kernel, but I can get proprietary software if I need it for something.

Because I like it
Because I had a Hard Drive crash and couldn't get a new Windows Xp disc. Been using Linux since.
Mint 18.2
